Meet Matthew Wiley of Channel 42 in Flint Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Wiley.

Matthew, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a recording artist from Flint, Michigan I came to Arizona back in 2010 or 2011. I started releasing music on SoundCloud and created an audience. One of the first song that I released Jaded brought me so much attention after a friend of mine shared it to Reddit. From there, I began to get a lot of DMs and emails from so many different producers and A&Rs. It was then I met my mentor Steve Rhythm. I went on to understanding more of my sound, song structure, and branding. I began to understand and get familiar with more of the business side of the music industry as well as the people in it. After releasing singles on SoundCloud. I compiled enough song for an Album. As I went searching for a name I remembered as a kid, I always grew up me and my friends watching Cartoon Network and later that night being exposed to anime for the very first time. The channel for Cartoon Network in Flint is Channel 42. So I decided to name not only my album but my company after that moniker.

A lot of those same kidz I grew up with watching anime and cartoons also have similar traumas that I was unraveling about myself at the time. I had just recently got out of a serious breakup and through that I began to understand all of the reasons why years earlier, I had always felt alone or never felt enough to be or do anything. Mental installments for generations telling me how to live my life and this was a common theme I seen in people that really were nerds. Or just people that didn’t feel like they had a place to belong in. I released this album and finally felt free from all constructs. The album has at the time of writing this received placements from the NBA Milwaukee Bucks highlight reel and is currently hold over 10k streams. I’m currently working on a couple of singles to close out the year. And a big release in January.

Has it been a smooth road?
Some struggles I’ve had is accepting nothing happens when you want it. Money, fame, respect, the accolades whatever it is. You just have to trust in the end result. And trust that it’s going to be good for you at that time. And that thats enough.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
So I sing, I rap, and I play guitar. A lot of the stuff on the album you hear me playing guitar. Tbh I suck. But I want to get better. I really am not a fan of a lot of rappity rap rap songs. People that know me know hiphop is huge in my life. But I like nas and playboi carti. Like its really not that deep. I feel like thats what sets me apart I’m not trying to do the rap thing or the rap sing thing or the trap thing. I just do MY thing. And say what I feel.

What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned over the course of your career?
I would’ve kept releasing more music and not waited three years to put out an album.
