Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Muir.
Matthew is an artist that has an interest in creating conceptual, surreal artworks with the aim of inviting the viewer to rethink and question many aspects of our society. Born in 1987 and raised in Tucson, AZ where he began his artistic career showing at various galleries around town. Matthew broke onto the National market at the end of last year with a showing during Miami’s world renown “Art Basel 2016” at the Art & Sol Studio’s Gallery in the Wynwood Art District. His passion for creating art that owns a deeper meaning to inspire social change began in his early 20’s after a friend exposed him to a film by peter Joseph called “zeitgeist the movie”. Matthew recalled that being a pivotal moment because it awaken a sense of curiosity that lead to the research on many subjects that would later show up in his work. He was consciously aware he could no longer create again without commentating on the world around him and became quickly submerged in the connection between political and spiritual statements in art.
Please tell us about your art.
I try to make art that inspires the viewer to think about everything we are doing to ourselves and the planet. So naturally the inspiration behind the conception of my artwork is rooted in a quote by Ernst Fischer:
“In a decaying society, art, if it is truthful, must also reflect decay. And unless it wants to break faith with its social function, art must show the World as changeable. And help to change it.”
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
I would say to that artist if this is really something you want to do make whatever sacrifices you have to in order to ensure you have time to progress your skills.. Because time is the most valuable thing to an artist development… if this means sleeping on your studio floor and eating Ramen for a while then so be it. It also helps when you’re painting something that you really believe in… If you stand for nothing then get curious about your world, get educated to find something stand for… dedicate your life to sharing that information with others. . And everything else will fall into place.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I currently have artwork on display with Monsoon collective (127 s. 5th ave.) pop up gallery in Tucson, AZ, USA.
