Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Jackson.
Matt, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been an avid car enthusiast since I was young which explains the ’80’s vibe and my love for DeLoreans. As a kid, I used to help my dad out all of the time with his Corvairs, so it was no surprise that I eventually I grew-up to enjoy working on and modifying my own vehicles, but as anyone with similar interests knows it gets very expensive.
My OCD mind took to enjoying a clean car pretty much the moment I got my driver’s license, but I started to notice deterioration from harsh weather and improper washing techniques were taking a toll on my car’s finish. I came to realize that detailing my vehicle was the one thing I could continually do to improve or enhance the look of it without spending $100’s of dollars every time (or so I thought!).
Around 2014, I began to put more time and effort into learning about professional automotive detailing and began asking for detailing equipment and chemicals as holiday gifts, reading everything I could about proper techniques and how-to’s, and searching out professionals to network with. I then turned my newly absorbed knowledge towards my own vehicles allowing me to learn through trial and error.
In 2015, I decided to turn my enthusiasm and passion into something I could share with others, and Biff’s Automotive Detailing was founded. Today Biff’s Auto Detailing has customers ranging from daily drivers to the like-minded automotive enthusiasts with treasured vehicles.
My pursuit of developing a higher skill set continues through networking with other professionals, my involvement in The International Detailing Association, and continued educational courses or training through local resources aside from time spent with customer vehicles.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been easy to become an established and recognized detailing business in The Valley, and I wouldn’t say even now that we’re very well known. Our mild winters, abundance of sunshine, size of market, and a high number of collector car auctions held here annually make the greater Phoenix area a hotbed of automotive detailing talent.
In addition, the relatively low startup cost for a detailing business makes it appealing to many looking to just make a quick buck. It has taken years of consistency and providing examples of finished work, happy customers, and a basic desire and passion for growth just to get to this point.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Biff’s Automotive Detailing story. Tell us more about the business.
At Biff’s Automotive Detailing we bring your car back to the future! We are hyper-focused on quality automotive detailing done correctly with the right tools, chemicals, and procedures… no shortcuts. This means that customers have to see the value of our services.
We take a customer-focused approach to solving automotive appearance issues versus offering an “a la carte” priced traditional detailing shop menu. The differences between us and other detailing outfits in The Valley are clear upon completing the initial client consultation and really validated after work has been completed. We’re interested in selling what the customer wants.
Often times that means advising and educating to give several options which go beyond detailing and offer “time travel” worthy results! As a business owner, I aim to be a resource for others in our industry and to also find charitable ways to pay forward the good faith and trust that I’ve received along the way.
Tell us about your favorite and least favorites things about our city.
There is such a large automotive enthusiast crowd and a frequent number of car shows.
The Valley also offers so many beautiful places for being in the middle of the desert; it is truly an oasis. Landmarks like of the East Valley like the Superstitions, Lower Salt River, and the Tonto National Forest really connect our East Mesa urban landscape with the beauty of Arizona.
There is so much culture and experience in Phoenix because it has become a melting pot of so many great people. The difficult parts of living here include mostly the weather… it’s hard to clean cars when it’s terribly hot during the summer, and our monsoons often keep people away from worrying about their car’s appearance.
