Meet Matt Horne of MTH Design Group in Southeast Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Horne.

Matt, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My interest in the landscape started at a young age, I was able to work within the landscape design, build, and maintenance industry through my teens and early 20’s. My passions developed as I received my Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from the University of Kentucky. Shortly after graduation, I moved to Phoenix and was fortunate enough to work with several different landscape architecture firms on a variety of interesting projects of various scale and scope prior to founding MTH Design Group in late 2009. With a sensibility influenced by an upbringing in the pastoral landscape of central Kentucky with its thoroughbred farms, bourbon distilleries, and antebellum architecture I embraced the beauty of the southwest. I focused my efforts on delivering quality design and construction of site projects working closely with clients through the design phase of the project and then making that dream a reality.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a rewarding road. I love what I do, but it has been and continues to be a lot of hard work. There were years of moving, with a goal and in a direction, to get myself to the place of taking the leap to start my own studio. I feel very fortunate that I found something I was passionate about and that it has been able to be a driving factor for much of my life. The business has slowly grown over a decade with each year being a little better than the one before so I really have no complaints about the pace for which things have happened. I’ve been able to meet opportunities as they presented themselves without getting ahead of my skis. Hurdles like getting my Landscape Architecture license, as well as my contractor’s license, were very big steps in establishing the business. There are all kinds of stresses associated with the construction process. Between designing, bidding, and building a project there are going to be a lot of decisions to make and a lot of moving parts to get a project completed while keeping everyone happy. The daily struggle at this point is managing some 25+ projects at any given time with them all being at different places within the process.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about MTH Design Group – what should we know?
MTH Design Group specializes in residential and commercial landscape design and construction. As a landscape architecture design/build firm, we provide a single point source for taking site design from concept to reality. This approach helps bring a fluidness to projects as things transition from concept, through construction drawings, to bidding, and into construction. As a Landscape Architect led build team, we can facilitate the flexibility needed to address the realities of construction while in pursuit of the goals developed while working very closely with our clients in the design and plan development phase. This close working approach allows the project to be a true reflection of the client and a response to the space and architecture.

Typical projects consist of site feature design & construction, landscape design & installation, construction administration, construction documentation, AutoCAD drafting, planning & permitting, and any other aspect of the design and construction of the outdoor environment. We serve a variety of clients from individual homeowners, contractors, developers, builders, designers, and municipalities.

We have licensed landscape architects and fully licensed, bonded, and insured landscape contractors in the state of Arizona. We strive to provide thoughtful and well-executed designs that meet a variety of project goals while developing something that exceeds our client’s expectations.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
The list of people who have helped me get to where I am today is long. The support of my family and a deep reservoir of friends throughout my life provided the foundation for everything. I had great professors, worked with great people along the way that we’re willing to teach, around people that made me more driven, around people that cared. I rely on a lot of people in taking projects from concepts to built spaces. Jelena, my associate who has been working with many for many years and my construction foreman, Enrique, who helps me take many of these jobs through construction have been very important in the success of the business and I couldn’t function on a daily basis without there commitment. My long-time partner, Sarah, is my daily rock and I am a much better version of myself because of her.
