Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Allison.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
When I was a little girl, I was a mess. It was rare for a day to go by, where I was not lying frozen on the couch, impaired by my own tears. One of those days, my dad strolled into the living room. Observing that I was upset about something, but not aware of what, he said, “You should do your best to remember how you feel in these moments, as one day you’ll grow up to be an adult, and you can remind other adults what it feels like to be a child. Most of us have forgotten.”
This moment stuck with me because, at this moment, I realized adults, most often, do not carry with them the innocent gleam that children quite organically radiate. I knew then that one aspect of my purpose was to remind “adults” that there is room in adulthood for innocence and childlike demeanor. Innocence does not have to coexist with naivety, and power does not have to come from force. Your innocence may indeed contain all of the power you seek.
Since then, this journey into innocence has taken many forms – guilt, elation, artistry, poetry, conviction, orgasmic liberation, pain, beauty, music, and most importantly, the confusing, yet oddly synchronistic journey, that is the ever-unfolding miracle hidden in each precious breath we take.
Please tell us about your art.
Painting: I am obsessed with Fibonacci spirals. Painting the code that nature so purely exhibits in the patterned structures that bloom effortless beauty.
Music: I just want to play my ukulele and serenade your holy heart.
Writing: One day, I wish to put into words that which silence has tried for millennia to convey.
Inventions: I have some inventions I’d like to create, and I would like for them to not just mimic nature, but blossom among it.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national, or international events and issues affect your art?
I feel the role of the artist is to provide reflection, and therefore, healthy contemplation, to a healthy society, and soulful medicine to a sick society. Right now, our society needs medicine.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
