Today we’d like to introduce you to Marti Spezia.
Hi Marti, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have had pet rabbits for over 12 years and support local rabbit rescues. When I started to follow one on social media, (Tranquility Trails) they were posting about how their bunny-sitting suites were getting full for summer vacations, and I thought, “I can watch a rabbit or two for people!”.
I reached out to the rescue to let them know they could refer people to me when they became full for bunny sitting. This is how it started! I started to get more and more calls, clients were using me again for bunny-sitting needs, and realized there was a need for bunny-savvy pet sitters.
I created a Facebook page, handed out business cards to exotic vets, then started an Instagram page. The social pages, along with the rabbit rescue, and word of mouth, helped my business grow tremendously. I now have space and accommodations for up to 12 pens. I love taking care of rabbits, and my clients know how much love, attention, care, and compliments their little fur babies will get when they stay with me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a very smooth road. The only struggle I deal with is booking to capacity and having to turn people away. I am trying to convince my husband to construct an add-on to the house so I can have more space, or at least allow me to sell all the living room furniture. haha
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Bunny Bunch Inn?
We specialize in rabbit sitting for people when they go on vacation or need a rabbit sitter for any reason. What sets us apart from others is that I have a bedroom dedicated to “bunny free time”. It is filled with things rabbits love, such as, chew toys, like a timothy hay hut, wicker baskets, cardboard tunnels and towers, and cat scratchers. Rabbits are prey animals, so for them to feel safe, they like places to hide. Their suits, and the playroom, have hiding places, such as cardboard castles, plush and enclosed animal beds, and a cute teepee.
I am amazed at how quickly my business has grown in a short time. I started my business in the summer of 2019, and I know my services will be needed for a very long time. We offer a calm, quiet environment for rabbits to come and stay with us. Each rabbit gets a 4×4 x-pen, which includes a large litterbox, fleece blanket, a plush bed underneath a wicker tent, fresh water, wicker balls and baskets, and a cardboard cottage house.
We provide fresh, organic vegetables daily, and organic treats (usually dried fruit), and the only thing owners need to bring are the food pellets. We provide lots of free time and exercise in the playroom, so many pets, kisses, and compliments. I think it is very important to tell the rabbits how cute they are, how proud you are about the things they do (like finishing all their salad), and how silly they are. The rabbits are greeted every morning, and all get a goodnight pet.
Each rabbit has a unique personality, and I quickly pick up on this and know how to talk to and approach each of my guests. Since I work out of my home, my business hours are very flexible, so if someone needs to drop me off or pick me up later at night, or on a weekend, it’s not a problem. I also brush the rabbits as needed, and will trim nails for no extra charge, upon request. I have also watched a pair of guinea pigs, and a chinchilla.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I have 7 pet rabbits of my own right now, and my oldest is 12 1/2 years old. I am also an Arizona native.
