Meet Martha Summerville of Hair Art by Martha in Ahwatukee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Summerville.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was a little girl, I used to get my hair cut at Carstens Salon located in Tempe, AZ. I used to watch the girls walk up and down the stairs as the school was upstairs. After high school, I attended the Carstens Institute in Tempe. And graduated just after a year. I started off working in a corporate salon. And after having my son, I was looking to have more availability and family time. I started renting a station inside of a Salon Called The Salon Spot located here in Ahwatukee. And that’s when Hair Art by Martha started. I have been in business for going into my 8th year this year. And been doing hair for ten years.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being an independent stylist isn’t always easy. I would say my hardest part was when I broke my wrist November 2018. Being out of work for seven weeks is always scary.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Being a Hair Artist, I strive to make sure my clients receive a service they deserve. I specialize in color transformations. I love assist my clients who have been coloring their hair to cover those shimmer greys and ready to embrace them. I help them with the transition this can be a six months to a year process but Trust the process. I also love to do the fashion colors from pinks purple and blues. You name it I’ve probably done it. To root touch ups and bayalage. When it comes to hair cuts I ask my clients LOTS of questions to make sure it works with their day to day lifestyle. I will look at their face shape, ask what they do for styling because I want them to feel comfortable styling their hair.

What were you like growing up?
I have always been very outgoing. My friends would say I swelled a microphone. I love to have fun and laugh.
