Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Jagodzinski.
Hi Mark, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
My journey to now began August 31, 1991. I was a very highly recruited football player at my alma mater Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix. In one play, during the first game of my senior season, my life changed after suffering an ACL, MCL, and medial meniscus tear referred to as the “Unhappy Triad”, a very intentional reference to the unhappiness it creates for the athlete who suffered the injury. For me, it was the beginning of a long road back to recovery and the birth of my intrigue in the field of Physical Therapy.
Two years later, after another “Unhappy Triad”, this time on the opposite side, I was sidetracked long enough to meet the love of life, my wife of 25+ years, Mariam. Fast forward another two years, which saw me finally complete my college student-athlete journey at Northern Arizona University as a GTE Academic All-American with a BS in Exercise Physiology and a minor in Athletic Training. Fast forward 2 more years, and I am admitted to the first Doctorate of Physical Therapy class in NAU history.
39 months later, I graduated with honors to begin my journey to Rise…4 years later, and in the middle of a pandemic, we are a small, but growing orthopedic and sports medicine PT practice providing patient-centric, evidence-based care to patients from all across the NW valley.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As anyone who owns a small business will attest, its never a smooth road. Easiest thing to do is make the decision to go out on your own. Then all the things you didn’t learn in school come to the forefront…lease negotiations, contracts, business taxes, benefits, OSHA guidelines, you name it… when it’s your name on the door, it all starts and stops with you, there’s nobody else to pin it on. I am blessed to have an amazing staff of people who share the passion for concept of what Rise is and can become, so that smooths over many of the “bumps” whether perceived or actual as in the case of running a business during the Covid-19 pandemic. I am proud to say we made it through this entire mess with staff intact, and not a single hour cut!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a small, outpatient orthopedic and sports medicine Physical Therapy practice in the NW Valley at the crossroads of Surprise, the Sun Cities, and my home city of Peoria.
Brand wise, I am absolutely proud of the fact that this barely 4-year-old business was built primarily on word of mouth and our reputation amongst the communities, and internal/external customers we serve. Providing individualized PT care, in a welcoming, almost family like atmosphere is what I’ve built the reputation of Rise OSPT on. Given my own experiences as a patient myself, unfortunately, many times over affords me an intuition and insightful compassion to patient care that many of my peers do not possess. I am most proud of our Phoenix bird logo and how it represents Rise.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
William Faulkner said, “you cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore”. In small business ownership, you are literally cashing out all your chips and making a huge bet that there are enough people…customers, clients, patients…who share your vision and are willing to gamble their healthcare needs on you to provide a personal, individualized, and exceedingly professional experience. In an age where tech remains supreme, I believe there is still room to survive with good old fashioned honesty, integrity, and compassion reign high as the driving force of the success behind your business.
