Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Erwin.
Mark, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Pacific is a Phoenix based, family owned business founded in 1958. Our focus is to provide great furniture and value to our customers in Arizona. For almost 60 years, Pacific has been blessed to work with some the best craftsmen and women in the business who have stayed by our side for years and decades. We consider them our greatest asset and part of our family. Nothing gives us more joy than to see our furniture in the homes of happy customers. From raw material to final delivery, we build each piece from scratch and by hand so that we can give our customers the very best.
Has it been a smooth road?
We have re-invented or “pivoted” at least three times in our history due to market changes. We survived a third-generation transition, devastating fire and 4 recessions.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Pacific Furniture – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Our factory manufactures upholstered furniture from raw materials to finished product here in Phoenix. This made to order model utilized a template driven, computerized process that ensures the quality and value of each piece even though it may be the first time we have made that combination. The factory practices LEAN manufacturing processes to eliminate waste and continuously improve.
Designers, contract, hospitality and consumers visit our Scottsdale showroom to select and order from millions of possibilities with our simple configuration process. They select the size, depth, style and material. 6-8 weeks later it is ready to go from our local factory. Sectionals are particularly popular since we configure each piece to the inch.
We focus on the local furniture business because the logistics of transporting fine upholstered furniture is a struggle for all companies. Tuft & Needle can disrupt an industry by shrinking a mattress and sending it UPS, but you can’t UPS a sofa.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We have been in Phoenix for 60 years. Our family was raised here, and our connections spread throughout the valley. Phoenix is a growth market with opportunities abounding. I worry about the wisdom of our city leaders when it comes to the financial sustainability of the pensions and spending.
