Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Bishop.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
After a very successful media career in Radio and Television in Australia, I turned to entrepreneurship doing a few businesses, including AFTASS, Australia’s Free Air Satellite TV Service, and a successful sales and marketing company specializing in Resort Real Estate. Migrating to America and marrying at 46 was a big move and a challenge with its ups and downs. Still, I settled into a successful Communications Marketing Agency in Tucson, Arizona, www.markbishopmedia.com. Apart from my own National and Local Podcasts, my focus is on helping businesses with a communications strategy that is seeing some of my clients get over a 400% ROI on monies invested!
I enjoy watching my clients grow and succeed.
My local show, “Tucson Means Business,” covers a broad spectrum of diverse businesses and tons of complimentary ‘not-for-profit promotional interviews.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
- Immigrating from Australia to America. Vastly different countries and gun laws.
- Being understood with my accent. Let me clarify this. There are two ‘styles’ of accents when listening to an Aussie talk. You have what we call ‘swine,’ which is the ‘slang the ocker’ delivery that has that ‘G’day mate’! ‘How are you goin’?- Drawl – as another could sound more rounded and British.
- Being the latter has helped me, as you can hear from my Podcast https://podcasts.markbishopmedia.com/category/the-mark-bishop-show/
- When you rip yourself away from your home country, it can sometimes get very lonely. I have missed the beaches and the sea air and of course many other things you grow up with. Living in the desert (although it can be beautiful) and with the dry air and not humid is excellent. (Now it’s just allergies, and there’s no way I would go down to Mexico anymore.) (What a shame).
- From a business standpoint, it has been challenging for me here in Tucson as I didn’t go to the U of A or a local high school and naturally didn’t grow up here, so trust is a key issue in business, and I have worked hard to gain it.
- Other than that, I am grateful for my new friends and clients and the respect shown for my skills and demeanor. My wife, Nancy, has been a Tucsonan since she was 12 after being brought from Long Island.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am sometimes accused of being ‘too hard’ or ‘demanding’ of my clients. We either get this job done right, and we/you win, or let’s not even try! I have always been competitive. Working from a young age, I had three part-time jobs while going to school, there was just my mom and I and the rent had to be paid. I had to become streetwise and resilient.
I didn’t have the luxury of completing a degree, being just mom and me, and I had no choice but to learn ‘hands-on’ about life, business sales, and marketing from the “best of the best” and add my skills to the mix. I attended many seminars that Americans brought to Australia. I have always had one philosophy in my working career – ‘to get the job’ done no matter how hard or challenging.
I have boxes full of plaques and sales awards, and as the number one Project Director for Wyndham Resorts and with Sales records for Starwood. A different vertical to media, but I carry over the tenacity in this role because I need to ensure my client succeeds.
Of course, the challenge can be where my client wouldn’t work in an iron lung, so it is difficult to motivate someone if they truly don’t want to be. So I am a teacher who cares about results, and although it can be very demanding, there is nothing better when an early result appears, and my client now has the belief and ‘spark’ to get the job done! When it comes to roles of recruiting, training, and managing sales reps and other leaders, I ask nothing of them that I would not be prepared to do myself.
Usually, it is best to ‘Take Point’ anyway, as it would give me all the answers I need to ensure the framing is correct and that anyone could get results. One of the proudest scenarios in my diverse working career was when I recruited non sales experienced boys and girls, cleaned them up, and trained them for two weeks 10 hours a day, until they could ‘close me!’
Within weeks we were the number 1 sales deck for Wyndham all across Australia, with records that will never be beaten. Now that’s a buzz!
My first love is the media, always has been, and when you have done what I have achieved in both radio and television, it can be tough to match the energy of it in the ‘outside world’.
Most of my friends in the media game were lucky to do one, never mind top out in two!
So I came out of retirement (can’t play golf seven days a week), did some talk-back shows on an AM station in Tucson and opened up my communications agency over three years ago. My goal is to create informative and helpful audio and visual streaming Podcasts that are marketed across America and globally.
I have secured a very strong viewer TV platform to launch my shows on now and am seeking national sponsors. A new chapter, a new challenge. “Let’s get the job done!”
We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
My client is pleased and myself grateful that we achieved the goal and that I have earned enough income to keep “the Minister for War and Finance” happy☺ You know what they say. “Happy wife – Happy life!” Throw in some travel to the Turks and Caicos with my beautiful white sandy beach and crystal clear warm water and watch my Australian Rules Football on the big screen at home, and I shot under 84 at the Fort Niners Golf Club in Tucson.
It doesn’t get any better than that! I am grateful!
