Today we’d like to introduce you to Marilyn Mena-Scott.
Hi Marilyn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began my career as a professional body piercer in Miami, Florida in 2002. After a few years of honing my skills there, I took an opportunity to work in New York City at a high-end piercing studio known for its fine gold body jewelry. It was during that time that I developed a deep love for working with precious metals and gemstones, a passion that continues to define my work today.
From there, I spent some time piercing in Eugene, Oregon before ultimately moving to Phoenix in 2009. After more than two decades in the industry, I decided it was time to create something that was entirely my own. In 2022, I opened Paloma Piercing, a private studio in Central Phoenix dedicated to high-end piercing and jewelry styling.
Alongside the studio, I launched Paloma Jewelry, my own line of fine body jewelry made from solid gold and precious gemstones. My favorite work to do, and what most people now seek me out for, is custom curated ear styling, where I create cohesive jewelry arrangements that reflect each client’s personal aesthetic. I’m grateful to have built a reputation that draws clients from across the United States who travel specifically for my work.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say it’s been a fairly smooth road for me. Body piercing came very naturally, and when it came time to open my own business, the challenges I faced were similar to what most new business owners experience, mainly having to learn everything from scratch and making mistakes along the way.
Nothing ever felt exceptionally difficult or like I struggled more than anyone else starting out. Every decision I’ve made has been intentional, and I truly believe the success I’ve had has come very organically. Things have a way of falling into place when you’re doing what you’re meant to do, and that’s how this journey has felt for me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Even though I’m a body piercer by trade, the specific service most clients seek me out for is something called ear styling. It’s a curated approach to designing an “ear outfit” that’s tailored to each client’s anatomy, aesthetic, and personal style. Whether someone prefers a minimalist or maximalist look, I create bespoke jewelry collections that accentuate their unique features and bring balance to the overall design.
I share a lot of my work on social media, where I talk about my process and showcase different styling ideas. That’s really what has helped me reach a wider audience and how many of my clients find me today.
What matters most to you?
I take a lot of pride in my work and in the experience I provide to my clients. I make it a point to really listen to what they’re saying, to understand their concerns, and to make sure I’m bringing their vision to life. At the end of the day, my clients’ happiness is always my top priority.
It’s important to me that people don’t just leave with something beautiful. They leave feeling cared for, comfortable, and confident. I love offering a level of service that feels personal and elevated, and that often surprises people when they realize how thoughtful and intentional a piercing experience can be.
