Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Sartin
Maria, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Maria Sartin and I am the New Zealand record holder in the women’s decathlon, founder of Uncontainable, GCU graduate student, and a D1 400m hurdler.
5 years ago I was just a New Zealand high schooler with a dream to come study and run in the States. In 2020, in the midst of COVID-19, I pursued that dream and moved to the USA to run track and study. I compete in the 400m and 400m hurdles and just last spring, I graduated from Concordia University Irvine with my bachelor’s in finance and marketing and embarked on a new chapter of my journey. Now, I live in Phoenix, where I’m pursuing my MBA at Grand Canyon University. But my journey doesn’t stop there—I still have track eligibility left, and I’m chasing my biggest dream: representing
New Zealand at the 2028 Olympics.
Uncontainable is a brand that I started my freshman year of college with a mission that goes far beyond selling clothes. Uncontainable is about empowering women to break free (become Uncontained) from limitations and embrace their uniqueness. I had worked full-time for six months before college, so I had saved up a little money. And I had a
decision to make. Starting a business was terrifying. I was investing my own money into something that I had
no guarantee would work. But beyond the financial risk, there was something even scarier—the risk of failure. The fear of what people would think if I fell flat on my face. The fear of being judged, laughed at, or simply ignored. But I refused to let that fear define me. I wanted to create something that I needed when I was younger—activewear that made
women feel strong, confident, and proud of their bodies. I wanted to build a brand that went beyond fabric and stitches—a brand that would cultivate a community of women who were unafraid to embrace their true selves.
While I am still growing this business alongside studying and running track, I have sold over 3000 activewear pieces to women! I hope that I can continue to grow Uncontainable and its community and help empower women to love their unique selves and grow together!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business and running track was not easy. It still isn’t. I faced (and still face) challenge after challenge:
● Finding the right suppliers to produce quality activewear.
● Marketing a brand with no existing audience.
● Balancing expectations vs. reality—especially in a world where social media makes
success look instant.
And even now, I fail. A lot.
● My business is still not as big as I want it to be.
● I struggle with injuries in track.
● I don’t always hit the times I want.
● I put in countless hours, and sometimes it feels like progress is slow.
But I keep going. Because I know that everything happens in God’s timing. If you stay patient, keep the faith, and remain open to His plan, everything will fall into place—maybe not the way you imagined, but in a way far greater than you ever expected.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Uncontainable is a women-owned women’s activewear brand founded with the mission to inspire women to become ‘Uncontained’ of their limits by helping them to embrace their unique selves through activewear, fitness, health, lifestyle, and community. Currently our activewear is sold online: www.uncontainable.co (@uncontainable.wear) and at local markets/ events in Phoenix area.
Maria Sartin was ultimately inspired to start Uncontainable as she faced and overcame her struggles like many women do
with self-image and disordered eating during high school. As a track and field athlete striving for excellence, she was told
by and listened to others about what she ‘should’ be, rather than listening to her own intuition. This ultimately limited her
from reaching her full potential and becoming her ‘truest self’. Through the development of Uncontainable, she wants to help
women other women come together, realize their full potential, and embrace their true selves, rather than conforming/ being contained by what others and the world want them to be; becoming Uncontainable. Uncontainable currently does this by sharing women stories, holding/ patnering on women community events and promoting all different body types and backgrounds!
Currently Uncontainable is undergoing development of an ‘Uncontianble fund’ in which 5% of all profits from your purchase will be donated to help women achieve their dreams. This will include providing scholarships and resources to women to achieve their dreams including starting a business, persuing their sport or career! We believe that the more women that are on purpose and acheiving their dreams, the better!
