Meet Maria Elsa Cervantes of Maria Elsa Photography in Queen Creek

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Elsa Cervantes.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began my photography journey seven years ago when I started my first year of high school. My school was offering a photography course for the first time and I was really interested in taking it. When I first began the class, I didn’t think photography would be something I would really enjoy, in fact, I would tell myself at the beginning of the year that I would simply just do my assignments to get a good grade and finish. The more I would work on these assignments though, the more I would fall in love with the creativity and work that goes behind every photo. I was lucky to have an incredible teacher that would inspire his students every day to do more than just take a photo but to look at what story one can convey, what message one wants to share, or what idea one can bring to life. I learned early on in my work that I want to make photos, not take them. I value the creative process in this way and I think it is what makes a photographer an artist. After a few years of saving, I was able to afford my very first and my own DSLR camera. Ever since, I have been shooting portrait sessions, family sessions and some weddings. Although, I like to think that I specialize in portrait photography. I have the deepest passion for connecting with other people, hearing their story and trying my best to capture them through my lens. I am currently in my third year of college studying psychology but I still make time to do what I love most, and that is photography.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road for me. I have always felt like my work is restrained at times due to financial struggles that don’t allow me to receive the newest or best equipment. I am lucky enough to say though, that I have a very strong, hard-working mother that has been a great example to me and has shown me that through diligence and hard work, we can rise above the things that weigh us down. I also have always struggled with comparing my work to the work of others and this can be a very dangerous road for me. I have times where feel as though I am not doing enough or thinking as creatively as others and I will tend to put down my own photographs. In these times, I try to do my best to remember that I am still in the learning process, and so is everyone else, as we always will be. It is also in these times that I feel the most inspired to just grab my camera and execute an idea that’s been on my mind.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Maria Elsa Photography – what should we know?
My photo company has been my own, self-run business. I market my services on social media, I schedule my own sessions, and I edit my own work. I think what sets me apart from most photographers is my ability to allow my creativity to be a mixture with my client’s own personalities. I do my best to accommodate their comfort and ease during the shoot but I also try to push ideas that may be out of their comfort zone at the same time. I like to think that it is a balance between allowing your model or client to feel like themselves but also allow them to explore ideas and be open-minded.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My high school photography teacher, Alma Smith, has played the biggest role in my photography journey. He has been a great mentor to me not only in teaching me the logistics of how to work a camera and Photoshop but also in teaching me what some photographers lack a creative eye. He would inspire me to go beyond what has been done, to never be afraid of the execution, and to always put my heart into my work.

My family and friends have also always been huge supporters. They would allow me to use them as models in my earlier years of practice, even if they didn’t necessarily want to. They have also always given me the support I need to feel that my work is greater than I tell myself. I don’t think I would be able to continue my work without them always reminding me that I am talented in what I do.
