Meet Maria DeNicola of Senza Pelo MedSpa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria DeNicola.

Maria is a leader in the Electrologist community. Throughout her career, she had devoted her life to serving others through her work in electrology.

As a result, Maria has been recognized with many awards and honors including The Gold Probe Award. This award is only awarded to one electrologist each year which exemplifies only the finest service in the electrologist community. It’s an acknowledgment of the work she has done and led others to do in the electrolysis community.

In February 2016, the Human Rights Campaign awarded Maria DeNicola its Independent Equality Award for her work helping the LGBT community. She is the owner and woman in charge at Senza Pelo MedSpa- a nationally-recognized “go-to spot” for people seeking the best in Hair Removal, and Skin Care. Their services range from Anti-aging lasers and Laser Hair Removal to Botox, fillers, and much more. How did it all begin? When she was just 12 years old, she attributed the mustache and chin hairs that appeared to a combination of puberty and Italian heritage. It was difficult for Maria as her classmates would tease her. So her mother decided to take her to an electrologist. Maria instantly loved the results! The experience was instrumental in helping her survive the awkward years with a healthier self-esteem and more confidence. At 17, Maria began her amazing career by enrolling in the Arizona State School of Electrolysis, and after 35 years, she has never looked back as she continues to change lives for the better.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My road has been bumpy not smooth at times, paved desire to change something for the better in the world.

Serving a community in a meaningful way through Electrolysis is hard in itself. Finding the person to serve was even harder. I discovered an article in the Arizona Republic newspaper – mind you, in the early 1980s. It was about a transgender woman who had been exposed in the newspaper without warning, just for being transgender. When I found the article in the 80’s, there is no Internet or any of the ways we have today to find or connect with people. It was almost impossible to research local transgender groups because they seem like they didn’t exist, I search the local public records to find her but could not.

Many months later lo and behold, out of any person that could’ve walked through my door, the woman from the article showed up for treatment. It took me a couple of treatments to drum up the courage to ask her if she knew of anyone else that I could help through electrolysis. She said no, she lost everything and, she was just was trying to live a life. But she did give me a few lead names, and I sent those leads a letter in the mail. I eventually work on the person who started a very Small TG group not more than ten people, she asked me to take over the local group A Rose. I found people to help and grew my practice in the work I did for them. I believe everyone should be given the Human Equal Right. I know I’m not alone countless Non-LGBT clients seek out and come from all stretches of our state and out of state for our Services.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, and I could do one thing differently I would have definitely finished College! I don’t know when, or what application I would need a college education, but that is something I regret. I was 17 yrs old when I bravely open my one-room company renting from a salon and still living at home. Happy to say I made it despite the college degree,
