Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcia Hamilton
Marcia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Title: Marcia’s Story
Then
I grew up in the heart of Kingston, Jamaica surrounded by vibrant colors, bold patterns, and the rhythm of island life.
My grandmother, well-known in the neighborhood for making beautiful woven baskets, taught me how to sew as a young girl in the rural hills of Saint Andrew, Jamaica. My grandmother’s impact stayed with me all through the tumultuous life of living in Kingston.
After high school I went to Jamaica School Of Fashion where I studied fashion design. I then worked for one of the top fashion designers in Kingston to gain my experience. Shortly after, I opened my own shop in Half-Way Tree, Kingston. A place where many vendors & seamstresses filled the stalls & the sounds of reggae filled the air.
My most treasured memories are in that small 12’ x 8’ shop with my fingers dancing across the fabric with precision that took me years to perfect and determination to my dreams that kept me committed to my craft, but as we all know dreams sometimes get put on hold.
Due to financial constraints, and a general lack of opportunity for my young daughter and I, I decided we were going to move to the USA. Greener pastures and the dream of that house with the white picket fence were in my sights.
2007 was a year filled with bittersweet memories of the transition from beautiful Kingston, Jamaica to Waukegan, Illinois. Starting life over, learning to adjust to a new place, a new culture and a new lifestyle, in a larger society with a child was extremely difficult.
Immediately I felt the weight of my responsibilities, decisions, the challenges of being without familiar support in a foreign land, a lack of visibility for my business, language barriers, adjusting to the below zero temperatures, you name it .
After trying for several years to get my business up and running, I was only being able to sew for a few dedicated customers. You can imagine my dismay and broken spirit during this time.
There were days when the pressure seemed too much, and the bills piled up faster than the orders came in. It was with a very heavy heart that I made the decision to change careers to pursue something more stable, so I went into the healthcare industry.
Today, I run my own boutique in a space that feels like a little slice of Jamaica in the heart of the desert.
I am not just a designer; I’m a cultural ambassador. My label, MarHam Dezigns, is a celebrated fusion of modern luxury and traditional Jamaican elements, seen on multiple runways in Phoenix, Arizona.
I am known for my sophisticated tailoring, and the distinct way I marry vibrant Caribbean colors with European silhouettes.
My journey from Kingston to the global stage has been a continued testament to my perseverance, resilience, and unwavering belief in myself and my roots.
My designs are a reflection of who I am—rooted in the rhythms of Jamaica, but with a sharp, cosmopolitan edge.
Each piece tells a story of my island’s history, the struggles of its people, and the bright future that lies ahead.
Despite my success, I have never forgotten where I came from.
For me, fashion isn’t just about luxury—it’s about opportunity, empowerment, and the art of storytelling.
I am proud to be a designer from Jamaica, and I know that no matter how far I travel, the soul of my island will always be woven into every thread I create.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Restarting my fashion business, definitely had its challenges. Fashion keeps evolving so I’m constantly learning new techniques, new creative ways.
As we pass through this season of fast fashion, and overcrowded market Space of so many other creatives.

The most important quality to my success is my attention to detail.
This quality ensures that the final product is well -crafted.
Paying close attention to the small details can make the difference between a professional polished piece and a rushed , poorly finished garment.
