Meet Marci McDonald of Lucky Air Plant in Central Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marci McDonald.

Marci, please share your story with us.
Lucky Air Plant came from a love of air plants and crystals. I bought a few and thought they were the cutest little things. I always wanted to do a business that had crystals in it. My aunt, Jane Ann, was a healer and a pioneer with crystal healing. She played a special role in my life and this business is based on her love and passion. We have combined the crystals and new found passion for Tillandsia’s (air plants) to create a really beautiful gift.

My family thought it was hilarious that I was doing a business with live plants. They have always known me to kill every plant I’ve ever had. These little guys have a special place in my heart. Through lots of research and experimentation I have become an expert in air plant care and in turn is teaching others. I can be found talking to my air plant friends, singing to them and caring for them. I love these little guys and we hope you will too. You will also find local collaborations and unique homemade gift items that will delight all the special people in your life. You may even find something special for yourself!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m not sure being an entrepreneur is ever a smooth road. Being an entrepreneur means you pretty much are always working on your business. I absolutely LOVE the air plants and love crystal hunting and creating. I’m not a big fan of the business side of things, building the website, doing the books and taxes. I have self-taught myself a lot of these things and I have a husband who pushes me to learn and encourages me to do everything. He motivates me and helps to keep my fear in check.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Lucky Air Plant – what should we know?
Designed in nature, our stunning healing crystals with attached air plant create positive energy for office, home, apartment or dorm room. Each crystal comes with the healing properties of the crystal and a care guide for the air plant. By adding the air plants to the crystals we create a very meaningful living gift for yourself or others. I hand select every crystal that we sell to help bring a natural, healing gift into your home or office.

Our state magnets are a reminder to grow where you are planted. Our original Wooden State Magnets – can be put on your refrigerator or any metal surface to show your home state pride, all 50 states are available including Washington, D.C.

Our Wood + Words + Air Plants are a subtle reminder to inspire happy thoughts and gratitude. All items include a beautiful Air Plant. The Air Plant simply pops out of the attached holster and can be watered by placing in a cup of water a couple times a week for 5-10 minutes. We recently added some very fun Wood Plaques with fun sayings + air plant. Biggie, Biggie, Biggie can’t you See Sometimes Your Leaves Just Hypnotize Me and Sometimes I Wet My Plants have been selling very well since their release a few weeks ago.

We are proud to collaborate with local makers such as Citizen Home Decor for all of our wood pieces. Collaborating on new products not only helps us grow but allows us to stretch into new avenues to grow our business. We collaborate with local companies like Junk in the Trunk and Phoenix Flea and local and national stores like Anthropologie and West Elm doing pop-ups in the valley. Local retailers like Mezona Market, Muse Apparel and La Grande Orange are essential to our business and are partners in our success. We also work with local business, Arizona Local Trade who showcases local designers in all of their home staging. Collaborations help us to be more a part of the community and bring a sense of partnership into our business. Working with other local makers is a great way to grow and support each other.

We are just starting up a rental business for weddings where we will rent out our crystals + air plants. Using crystals and air plants is becoming a big trend and we will be the only company in Arizona to rent out stunning crystal pieces and beautiful air plants for events and weddings. We will help create a living and natural component in weddings that will help to bring positivity and originality to events and weddings looking for a stunning new component to add to their decor.

Since starting the company a little over a year ago we have shipped all over the country and have shipped thousands of corporate gifts. We pride ourselves on our speedy shipping and customer service. We love happy customers and do everything to help our customers have a great experience. We hand make every gift box and take pride in packing our crystals so opening our package is a great experience.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am a go-getter and a real salesperson. I connect with my customer because I love people. I have high energy and give 100% in my life and business. My mantra this year is SHOW UP. Inspired by a friend I choose to SHOW UP in my life, for my family, friends and my business, Sometimes that means showing up to face my fears. I try to embrace my motto and be a positive force to hopefully inspire others to do the same. Having a positive outlook on life for me is really important even when we face adversity remaining positive and grateful is a very good objective for being successful.
