Today we’d like to introduce you to Mara Baier.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mara. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started my Taekwondo journey when I was a teenager. My mother thought girls should know how to defend themselves. I later restarted as a mother. It was to be an activity to do with my children. I have two daughters and wanted to do a sport that offered physical fitness as well as self- defense. The life skills that all martial arts offer to children, as well as adults, are immeasurable. My children learned self-confidence, respect, modesty, discipline as well as many other life skills all while learning self-defense and physical fitness. We had a great time and I cherish the moments we spent on the mat. After we all obtained our black belt, it became clear to me that my journey in martial arts had only begun. The personal enrichment and satisfaction that came from teaching and passing on this art are immeasurable. Now as a fifth degree black belt, a Master Instructor, and a school manager, I take pride in the value of passing the life skills taekwondo offers as well as contributing and shaping young children and athletes., As a family practice physician, I know all too well the benefits physical fitness, confidence, commitment, and goal setting has in one’s life. Especially if dealing with a child that has been bullied or has low self-esteem. Martial Arts and taekwondo always top my list of suggestions as to how to deal with these life obstacles this amazing art added depth and meaning to my life. I train under Grand Master Rubben Lolly and have found a true mentor and leader. He constantly keeps me striving to be a better martial artist as well as truly helping me master the art.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Theodore Roosevelt once said, ” Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life.” I cannot boast a Fifth degree Black Belt without admitting it has not always been easy. Especially competing at my age, injuries sometimes occur. I always say that with every injury, there is valuable lessons and opportunity for growth. It is not always easy to step on the mat and train especially with pain. I have come to realize that the feeling of accomplishing a physical goal outweighs any injury that may occur. This year I placed second in Nationals and am currently ranked second in my age group.
