Today we’d like to introduce you to Maeby.
Maeby, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up I was a choir kid and would be in like seven choirs at a time. I never thought singing would be something that I could actually pursue as a career until after I graduated in 2017 from Arizona State University with my Bachelor’s of Biological Sciences. While in college, I hadn’t really put any effort or thought into songwriting until I was out of school, which is when I started writing simply because it was therapeutic; I needed it. I started to write a song a day, and I began performing out at open mics around the valley (my first ones being SoZo Coffeehouse, Yucca TapRoom, Shady Park, and Rula Bula). There were many times where the only people listening were the bartenders and the bouncers, but honestly, there could have been no one in the room and I would have been happy solely from just being up and singing on a stage.
Through playing at various open mics weekly and writing daily, I improved and gained connections and traction. At first, my only gigs would be acoustic sets at coffee shops and then grew to being full band performances at bars around the valley and up in Flagstaff. I eventually found a producer (JJ from Catalyst Studios) who helped me record and produce my single, “Dive”. Not only am I so proud of how the song sounds, but having been able to direct and film its music video with the help of Dan (from Solo Visions) really see this project to its full potential. Releasing the song and video together felt like breathing after not being able to for a while; I’m just so happy I finally got to share with people the vision I’ve had stuck in my head for months.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Pursuing to be a full-time musician is always hard, and I think the biggest struggles have been (and are struggles for all artists) finding my sound, connecting with people that are cohesive with that sound, and of course, dealing with financial burdens.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
As a musician, my work is essentially to sell myself as something that is relatable, like-able, and jamm-able. I believe that my songwriting sets me apart from others, and I try to hone this skill by writing whenever I have spare time. I also try to go a step further by adding my own directed visuals to further listener connection to my songs.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Do you ever really know the future when it comes to the music business? I guess my answer would be “we’ll see”. I’ve started to build my network in Los Angeles and will be moving there (very very soon) in hopes of furthering myself as a musician beyond my hometown.
