Today we’d like to introduce you to Madalyn Nault.
Madalyn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started sewing when I was very young, my mom taught me and allowed me to use her materials. I made doll clothes from felt and little-stuffed animals from scrap fabric. I started making purses in high school, I was awkward and had black and purple hair and nothing was cool or unique enough so I made my own bags. My friends would ask me to make something for them and it just became my hobby to see what else I could come up with. Between then and now (about 12 years later), my hobby organically grew up with me and one day I realized hey this is a business!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a fairly smooth road to get here because when I started it was a hobby of mine and it was fun to create. I’ve let the business grow with me, not forcing anything and not going into debt to make it happen. The challenge now is wanting to grow and step outside of my comfort zone but feeling overwhelmed by what it will take to pull it off! I am a one woman operation right now and growth takes a team.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Madalyn Nault Accessories story. Tell us more about the business.
I create handmade purses and accessories. Every piece I make is unique if the outside looks the same the lining or pocket is different. I’ve become known for my staple pieces, my wallets and clutches and more recently my cactus line. I’m also known for creating custom orders, people come to me to create purses for their wedding party, to put their dog on a purse, to make purses out of loved one’s clothing, I’ve even made a purse with a book on it with turning pages. Whatever ideas people come up with I try my best to pull it off! I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve gotten here by following my heart and I’ve gotten the success I have now by being genuine and personal with people. I think it’s one thing to have a business but it’s a completely other thing to be a business that people can connect with and feel involved in the growth of it. What sets me apart from other handbag companies is my unique style & my option of creating custom orders.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m not sure how to answer this question, I’m not sure if I’d call it luck, good or bad. It is all just life. Living a grateful life and not taking anything for granted provides you with more and more to be grateful for! This is how I live my life and run my business.
