Today we’d like to introduce you to MacKenzie Olson.
Hi MacKenzie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a young age, I was fascinated with the art of hair. The idea of being a bridal hair and makeup artist had crossed my mind; however, the opportunity did not present itself until I moved to Arizona just 4 years ago.
When attending cosmetology school in 2013, I struggled with anxiety and feelings of not belonging in the beauty industry. I convinced myself that “doing hair” wasn’t enough—that I had more to offer the world. These thoughts along with my determination to make a difference in people’s lives, had me questioning my choice of Cosmetology. I decided to enroll in college at Boise State and had switched between majors: psychology, nursing, teaching, and athletic training. However, I never completed a degree. Regardless of what I pursued, I always found myself back in beauty industry. I was a natural and clients found me easy to open up to.
I started to cherish the connections I was building and the stories I was hearing from the people in my chair. It turns out my favorite part of working in salons was connecting with people. As I matured, I quickly realized that a job title has little to do with the difference you can make in the world.
For the first time I allowed myself to experience joy and fulfillment within my career. These feelings overflowed to those around me, and I began creating meaningful connections with my clients—many of whom I’m lucky to call friends.
Originally, I’m from a small town in Southeast Idaho where the wedding industry isn’t as demanding as it is here in sunny Arizona. With people traveling to the state for destination weddings, countless venues across the valley, and a nearly year-round wedding season, Arizona was the perfect place to create “Boho Brides.”
The name of my business came to me during a yoga practice one morning. I could envision the idea clearly and Boho Brides felt right. To me, this name would represent a free-spirited and authentic community. I wanted to create a beauty salon that left cattiness and judgment at the door—a place where clients could show up just as they are, without fear of being too much or too little. My goal for Boho Brides is to be, above all, welcoming.
After a conversation with someone at my apartment dog park, Boho Brides had the opportunity to flourish. I shared my desire to work as a bridal hairstylist in Arizona, and she had mentioned knowing someone who owned a bridal hair and makeup team. I soon began working with the team and had met a makeup artist who has since become a great friend. She later branched out on her own, and her business had unbelievable success within a year. My friend’s story inspired me to continue growing Boho Brides and build my own team—which brings us to today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I believe there’s a fear of failure that comes with owning a business. For me, this often leads to periods of complacency. Staying in my comfort zone holds me back from pushing both my business and myself to reach the heights I know we’re capable of achieving. It can be challenging to stay focused on my career goals when I’m distracted by the clutter of life.
Having the clarity that this is what I am truly passionate about and committed to helps bring me back when challenges arise. I’m a natural problem solver, so although challenges can be anxiety-inducing, I find it exciting to discover solutions.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As an inspired cosmetologist, I’m known for being a one-stop shop. I offer a range of services, including; haircutting, color services, waxing, eyelash extensions, Reiki therapy, as well as bridal hair and makeup. Offering a variety of services to my clients helps to keep me motivated in the beauty industry.
Although I remain busy with many clients, I’d say my niche is bridal hair styling. This truly never feels like work when I’m in the middle of creating a style. As I’ve gained confidence and practice in makeup, I’m happy to offer both of these services to our bridal parties!
Creating Boho Brides has been a great accomplishment. I’m proud that I took the leap to start my own small business. Although it can be challenging at times, witnessing its growth—along with my own—brings me fulfillment and joy. Life is about connection, and I’m grateful to have found a career that allows me to experience this with people from all around the world.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Ahh, the role of luck.
I am one of those people who truly believes everything happens for a reason and in divine timing. I don’t necessarily believe in bad luck; I believe in the circumstance not being ideal for you, unfortunate timing, or lack of structure.
When you put in the work and trust the timing, in my mind, things will work out exactly as they are meant to. I have been lucky enough to be blessed with an amazing community of friends and family who support me when times are hard and a clientele base that I adore.
