Today we’d like to introduce you to Macaley Fields.
Macaley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In middle school I landed my first job working in a haunted house; I was hired to be a dancing zombie, but I quickly fell in love with the special effects makeup. I played around with makeup a bit in high school but really set my eye on the prize in college. I started at ASU for Theatre Design and Production. My sophomore year, I doubled up and went to Esthetician school, as well as ASU full-time.
In this same year, I became certified in airbrush makeup. While I was designing makeup and special effects for several shows at ASU, I also began free-lancing for special occasions. Today, I work with local brides, fashion designers, photographers, theatres, and film-makers all over the valley designing makeup and hair.
Has it been a smooth road?
It was not smooth in the beginning. Contrary to what was stated online when I was first enrolling in ASU, there are no makeup classes offered there. Because of this, I was strongly urged to explore different theatrical tech paths such as carpentry, scenic painting, props making, and stage managing.
While this made me a well-rounded and empathetic theatre artist, it simply was not what I wanted to be doing. It wasn’t until I basically told ASU that I was going to do makeup one way or another, that they finally made some room for me in the design process and began helping me find internships around the valley to fill in the spaces that were lacking in my education.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Looks That Kill Makeup Artistry – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Looks That Kill Makeup Artistry is a highly versatile company that offers more than your standard makeup artist! On the beauty side of things, I offer airbrush makeup which is more light-weight than traditional makeup, AND more resistant to water and smudging. This is the perfect option for weddings and other special occasions when you’ll be wearing makeup for long periods of time and need to combat those happy tears–plus it looks flawless on camera.
Additional services that are very popular in my bridal crowd are my sunless tans and tattoo coverups. The tans are custom mixed, organic, and vegan, guaranteeing you won’t have that dreaded orange tone. Tattoo cover-ups are water-proof and smudge-proof meaning that it’s perfectly safe for you to wear in your wedding dress. On the theatrical side of things, I’ve designed on every type of show from Shakespeare to a modern-day horror piece.
The thing I believe sets me apart from other companies is also what I am most proud of. At the end of every job, not only have I created something beautiful, but more importantly, I have made the client or performer FEEL beautiful and confident. This is of the utmost importance to me because no matter how technically correct a makeup is, it’s not good enough if the client doesn’t feel absolutely stunning at the end.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the weather we have! Fair temperatures mean people are having fun events, be it weddings or site-specific theatre performances, all year round and I never truly have a “slow” season. I sometimes dislike the amount of travel required to work in the valley–it can get a little daunting as we are very big and spread out state. Although, this is a small price to pay to work in all the beautiful different scenery Arizona has to offer!
