Meet Lydia Madrid

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lydia Madrid.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in Leganes in 1995, I am 23 years old, and I have been tattooing for two years.

I guess we all have a story. Since I was little, I always like to draw, with 7-8 years I started to give painting classes, and I started making my first pictures. But I did not do much more, since I left the classes soon after, and did not do anything else related to the drawing until I was 16 years old. When I was 16 years old, I took my artistic baccalaureate, and I went back to drawing a bit, but I had not thought at any time that I could dedicate myself to anything related to art. I was about to start my law career, to be a lawyer, but at 19, due to personal problems, I went from Madrid to Barcelona. That last year in Madrid had been horrible, and I could not find myself, I could not find any motivation or goal, I did not know what to do.

So I decided to go to Barcelona, where I would learn to tattoo later.

For me, Barcelona, has been an incredible experience.

I have found in the tattoo a way to express myself, and a way to feel well and recognized since I have always had self-esteem problems.

When I began to tattoo, I did not expect anything at all, I have been accepted very well by people, and my clients and I am very happy. Happy of all the opportunities that my work offers me, and of being able to travel doing what I like.

Please tell us about your art.
Well, I create illustrations, designs for tattoos, but they could perfectly be illustrations. I could not explain very well what I want to say or express, but what people see from outside, and they tell me, is that my designs express feelings, especially in the eyes, like nostalgia or melancholy. But as I explained before, I do not know very well what I express, since everything depends a lot on my state of mind, which always varies a lot. Then everything depends on that, and based on that I express certain things or others.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I think that if it has changed, what I do not know if it is exactly better or worse, even if I think a bit of both. Now there is more visibility ‘for art, but on the contrary, we also find more people who do not feel art as such, trying to make easy money from that.

As to whether it hinders my art, no, specifically the world of tattooing, I do not think that, on the contrary, it has evolved a lot and has much more acceptance all over the world.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can see it especially in my Instagram. They can support it by giving me a liking, commenting on the photos and sharing in their stories, an act as simple as commenting, it helps a lot to the visibility of my work in that social network.
