Meet Lucas Shaw

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucas Shaw.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am 16 years old. I began playing classical piano at the age of four and guitar at the age of seven. I developed an interest in music starting at two years old when I began listening to Green Day. I have learned to play piano, guitar, and about twenty other instruments since that time. Throughout my musical journey, I have been given the opportunity to partake in life-changing experiences, including playing at Lollapalooza twice, touring the United States twice, and playing with musicians such as Brad Paisley and Randy Jackson of Zebra. In addition to this, I enjoy computer programming and law, of which I intend to achieve degrees in college.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been some struggles, particularly in that I have difficulty communicating with people socially, partly due to being on the autism spectrum. At the previous school that I attended, I had a lot of trouble making friends because I didn’t quite fit in with the social atmosphere there because I tend to be introverted and quiet, as opposed to being extroverted and demonstrative. However, at my current school, I seem to be making more friends and have been trying to become more sociable. Playing music helps me to express myself in ways that I can’t one on one with people. When I hear music, I see the notes as colors and playing in front of people gives me a sense of self that helps me to overcome my shyness and social awkwardness. I feel my music communicates to people who I am and what I am about.

So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
In the future, I intend to attend a university, ideally being Cornell University or another Ivy-League. I’m currently ranked 1 in my class and hope to be Valedictorian when I graduate high school in two years. At Cornell, I would like to study Computer Science for my undergraduate degree, and then go on to pursue a Law degree. I hope to become a lawyer. This summer, I will be attending the Cornell University Summer College program, in which I will be taking three Cornell undergraduate courses for Cornell credits. Due to this, I am currently enrolled as a student at Cornell University. I also intend to continue playing music as much as I can. I want to always grow as a musician as well as in my studies.
