Meet Lori Cleverly of North Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Cleverly

Hi Lori, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a mom to 4 boys. I was a PE and Health teacher at a local high school. I realized after my 2nd son that I wanted to stay home with my kids. I was able to do that after my 3rd son was born. I had tried other direct sales and wasn’t able to make it successful. My husband, Nate, suggested I look into project management. There was a coursera course that I took. I really enjoyed it. I like to find solutions to problems and make things work. So after I finished my course, I went looking for a job. I was still the main caretaker of my kids and had 2 in school and 2 at home.

Tragedy struck our family when our 3rd son passed away. It was a process of healing and moving on as a family. At the end of August in 2022, I found this opportunity. I have 2 with autism and was trying to show my boys that even though we miss your brother we can still be happy and still make new memories. Now I can help other families make new memories.

I love the opportunity to help my clients save time and money. Each trip is unique. Different destinations, accommodations, and budgets. If I am not familiar with a destination, I will do my research and become knowledgeable about that destination. I have earned many certifications. I enjoy the opportunity to never stop learning. I do everything I can to get the best deals and options for my clients to exceed their expectations.

I have specialized in Special Needs and Disability travel because I have learned that it is your own mind that stops people from traveling and those individuals and families need help knowing what resources are available to them. I used to think the same way. Now I know how to travel with my kids.

Being a travel agent allows me the flexibility I need to be there for my kids and work when they are at school or asleep.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have definitely been some struggles. I know people like to travel but when they are ready to travel is the question. I am still trying to gain clientele. I have a few very loyal clients that keep coming back. But I’m trying to educate people, you can book your own trips. If you book your own trip, the commission is already built in and it goes back to that agency. If you use a travel agent, even if it is the same price, the commission goes to that person.

I also want to help people that have busy lives. I save the time it takes to do all that research.

I am constantly trying to network with others and have partnered up with business. I am not afraid to ask. I don’t know until I ask.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a full service travel agency. I specialize in special needs and disability travel. I am also able to help you with any other travel but usually do family trips. I have 2 boys with Autism. We also have food allergies and sensitivities. I ask for myself what it would be like for my family to travel so I can help others. I talk to (BDM) Business Development Managers about accessibility and allergies. I also love to hear when companies have resources for those families.

I am most proud of my clients going on trips and telling me how incredible it is. How they are grateful for my help and were able to enjoy time with their family.

My love language is Acts of service. I also like to dig to find answers and deals. I want to serve my clients the best deals and take care of all the help they want and need.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I took a risk starting this opportunity. What work was I going to do? How was I able to do it all? How would I find clients?

I have taken risks by setting up at events. Which event is best for me? Is the cost worth the opportunities that it could bring, What is the minimum I need to have this successful. There are events or organizers that I will not work with again. I look at other opportunities and have said that I’m not able to do that or I’m not ready.

Risk is the unknown. That can be scary for people. If there is no risk, there is no reward. There are limits. What will happen if it fails? Is that something that is doable and the ability to recover? Then take the risk. We need someone to make us think about both sides so we think about it and can make our best decision.
