Today we’d like to introduce you to Lora Schelle, DVM.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Originally from Ohio, I graduated from Ohio State University in 2004 and moved to Arizona after graduation in order to join my family and get out of the snow and ice. I worked in private practice and for corporate for a few years, then purchased a clinic with a colleague. I was co-owner for 5 years, then due to different visions, left to join private practice again. I did relief work as well but felt that there was a need for a house call practice in the valley to help those people who have pets who are fearful of vet clinics or other animals, pets who may be dog or cat aggressive, or families that just want stress-free home care for their family member. I have wonderful clients and patients that I get to interact with every day. I do a lot of preventative care such as vaccines, bloodwork, exams but I also deal with medical issues, geriatric and pediatric care, as well as in-home euthanasia. I feel that owners and pets are more comfortable in their own homes which reduces stress on them as well as on the veterinarian treating them.
Has it been a smooth road?
So far, it has been fairly smooth overall, only a few bumps along the way. I currently do my surgeries and x-rays at clinics owned by my colleagues but in the near future will be opening a facility of my own where I can do these things on my own schedule.
Being paperless, there is a lot of email, text, and phone communication that has to be kept up with daily. Scheduling, that we are not going from one end of the valley to the other can be challenging.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Schelle Veterinary Services story. Tell us more about the business.
We provide in-home veterinary care for cats and dogs in the East Valley. We are compassionate, professional, and caring. We spend a lot of time educating clients on their pet’s individual needs, focusing on preventative care, and giving options when it comes to medical decisions. We treat our clients like family just as they treat their pets.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Veterinary medicine appears to be moving toward a lot of corporate based clinics and hospitals with treatment plans and protocols that are based on averages, not the individual’s needs. We strive to keep our patient’s individual needs in mind, as well as our client’s goals when we treat our patients. We will keep our practice family oriented and home town based.
