Meet Logan Greene of Groundworks in Tucson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Logan Greene.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been a musician and teacher in Tucson for over a decade and over the years, I’ve seen the accessible arts spaces in town dwindle to nearly none. On top of that, arts and music that is all-ages and accessible is even more rare and the opportunities that I had to perform and express myself when I was growing up are now nonexistent. So, I decided to do something about it and start an all-ages arts education center called Groundworks. After our opening this spring, we’ll be hosting classes, workshops and live events at our space and provide arts access to people of all ages.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I started planning the space and the concept in late 2018 and it’s taken since then to actually get up and running. We received our nonprofit status from the IRS last spring and since then have taken to searching for the perfect building. That process was the hardest part because we were at the whim of realtors, landlords, architects and other professionals who didn’t necessarily understand our vision or have our best interests at heart. However, all of the struggles along the way did lead us to a perfect location at 236 S. Tucson Blvd in central Tucson and we’re excited to finish the buildout and get ready to open!

Please tell us about Groundworks.
Groundworks promotes the youth-driven music and arts community in Tucson, AZ. We aim to provide a space for people of all-ages to learn about, explore, express themselves through and anything else they’d like within the world of art, music and beyond. We’re excited to provide classes and workshops that are less orthodox than a traditional music school or art class. Inside the space is a gallery, an all-ages music venue and a fully equipped classroom to better serve our mission of providing arts access to the community.

What were you like growing up?
I’ve always loved music in a way that goes beyond people who say “I’ve always loved music.” Even before I played an instrument, I would get absolutely obsessed with artists and performers, so when it came to learning music myself, I took to it like a fish to water. Now, that’s not to say I was always a good musician, just very excited to be a part of the art form I enjoyed so much. It took years of practice and dedication to be able to perform and teach professionally. So, growing up I was more of dive-in head first kind of guy before I later learned that patience has some serious virtues!
