Meet Lisa Vukonich of Fuchsia Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Vukonich.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My business partner and I worked together in higher education for 5 years. At the end of the 5 years, I decided to leave the company as I had two young children and was missing a lot of important things in their life as often worked 50-60 hours a week. My business partner Erin Owens decided to join me and we started looking for a spa franchisee to purchase. In 2005 there were not many in the space.

Massage Envy was just gaining traction but did not offer nail and aesthetic services. They also did not have the warmth, energy, and fun we were looking to create. In 2006 we launched Fuchsia Spa which focuses on skincare, massage and nail services via an affordable membership model. Our first location was in Mesa. We have since grown to another location in Gilbert and are getting ready to open one in Ahwatukee (Phoenix).

We also have a North Phoenix location that is owned by one of our original employees Shauna Owens and her sister Marissa Owens. And Suzanne McNamara has purchased 3 Fuchsia locations in Tucson with her first opening in late September. We are very excited to grow Fuchsia throughout Arizona, Texas, Nevada, and Utah. Our goal is to sell 15 more Fuchsia locations in the next 3-4 years.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In 2008 we hit the recession which turned out to be a very positive experience for our business as it forced us to tighten up our business systems which have since helped us expand.

We have had so many female business owners that did not even know us when we started and they took time out of their busy days to help us launch Fuchsia. Since then we have made it a point to help other women as they start down the path of business ownership.
