Meet Lisa Rehurek of The RFP Success® Company in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Rehurek.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lisa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am someone who never knew what I wanted to do — and I thought that was a bad thing. I put a lot of pressure on myself to find my place. It took me a long time and a lot of stress to figure it out. Multiple colleges, multiple drop-outs before I finally graduated. Multiple careers in all sorts of industries, before ultimately finding a great deal of success in corporate America. But once I started listening to my intuition, I knew that I needed to own my own business. Problem was, I had no idea how to do that. No one I knew had their own business. But I kept feeling the pull, and the universe gave me an opportunity to take the leap.

I started out partnering with someone else for the first three years out of corporate America, and I learned some valuable lessons in that experience. The biggest lesson: you won’t be successful in your own business if you don’t love what you do. I certainly didn’t love the businesses that we owned, and I felt like nothing more than a glorified employee. It wasn’t the excitement of business ownership that I had hoped for. And so, I left that partnership after three years to start my own business. That was almost nine years ago.

The trend of me trying to figure things out continued for the first five years in business. I ultimately started as a business coach/consultant, with a pretty broad message of how I could help other businesses. There were multiple iterations of what that looked like; some of them are cringe-worthy. 🙂 I eventually learned to stop “pushing” my agenda, pushing to figure it out, and let it just come to me. That’s when I found my ideal niche, which is what my business is now based on. With finding this perfect niche, I’ve been able to grow a very successful, multiple six-figure businesses, with an average growth of 75% year over year for the past four years. And now, I have found my place and I love what I do.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Business ownership is never a smooth road! My first foray into business ownership was with a partner, and that was a failure on many fronts. When I went out on my own, I tried multiple concepts for my own business, all of which failed. I had two extremely difficult, low-income years where I was at the bottom of the barrel — scared, stressed, and doubtful. It took me a long time to figure out what I wanted, and I shed a lot of tears in that process. Doubt, fear, fraud-syndrome, demotivation, and self-doubt, all have played a role in my journey. It’s been a roller coaster, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The RFP Success® Company – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I love the niche that my business is now focused on. We help businesses who respond to RFPs (requests for proposal) win more business! We teach them how to respond so that they will be the frontrunner, and win over the evaluators.

What I’m most proud of is the industry-leading, comprehensive resource for RFP responders that we have become. Yes, we provide strategy, support, training and consulting for our clients, like many other firms. But we also have an online training institute for proposal managers/writers to continue to hone their skills. We have a podcast that is all about all-things RFPs — tips, strategies, resources, success stories. I wrote The RFP Success Book last year, and am working on a second version now. We have a LinkedIn Community. We aim to help our clients do better so they can win more.

The goal is to provide new and creative resources to an industry that has been one-dimensional, and frankly a bit stale. We also love to have fun, so any time we can inject fun into the mix, we do it!

Is there anyone, in particular, you would like to recognize? Mentors, etc?
I had two bosses when I was in corporate America who really helped me see how my skills contributed at a high level, even though I was vastly different than most of the people I worked with. And frankly, I love to be different, so that worked out well. 😉

I have also had so many mentors – paid and non – since I started this business almost nine years ago. Some kicked me in the patootie when I really needed it; some taught me new skills; some taught me how to have more confidence in what I do; some pulled out the genius in me; and, well, some that taught me what I didn’t want to be. I needed them all and am grateful.
