Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Reiser.
Lindsey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona. Once I decided to pursue journalism, I knew ASU was a clear choice. I graduated from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communication and also earned a degree in Spanish. El Paso, TX was my first market, and I worked there for nearly a year and a half as an MMJ, or multimedia journalist. That means I set up, shot, wrote, and edited all of my pieces. I came back home in August of 2011 and officially became the weekend anchor for KPHO/KTVK about three years ago. I love that I can anchor the news on the weekends and still report during the week – it is a perfect hybrid to sharpen both of those skill sets.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The world of broadcast news can be grueling and competitive, as well as involve sacrifices. I do not have a normal schedule – I work weekends and late into the night. I also usually work for a few holidays. But the trade-off is getting to be in a different environment every day and work with some incredibly talented, intelligent, and creative people. I get to meet new people and experience new things, and never get bored. I also have a front seat to what is happening in our community, and the ability to tell those stories is both a huge honor and a huge responsibility.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Arizona’s Family story. Tell us more about it.
Every day, I come into work and never know what will be before me. I pitch my story ideas in our editorial meeting and set up interviews. My photographer and I work hand in hand to discuss how we want the story to look and what elements we want to include. Building on natural sound, interviews, and video, I write the story that my photographer then edits. We often then present the story live at 9 and 10 pm on CBS 5 and 3TV. On weekends, I co-anchor our 5, 6, 9, and 10 pm newscasts and also write stories that our photographers shot that day. I post stories to the web and am constantly engaging on social media. As part of Arizona’s Family, I am most proud of being a champion for local stories that impact our community. Our teams work incredibly hard and treat our interview subjects with compassion. We also see ourselves as a family and celebrate the milestones we achieve together.
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were just starting out?
I would treat my career as more of a marathon than a sprint. Every experience will teach you something new, and you may not know the lesson at the time, but it will all make sense in due time. You can’t be in a hurry to grow; it has to come with practice and patience.
