Meet Lea Junia and Frank Dianhuan Tang of Sun Devil Wing Chun Club in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lea Junia and Frank Dianhuan Tang of Sun Devil Wing Chun Club.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Lea
As a kid, I always wanted to be a martial artist like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, even Jet Li. When I was 4, I stuck it out with the boys doing Taekwondo and in middle school “boxing” in the garage with my older brother. Throughout the years, I’ve always searched for a style but could never settle for a single one. As a young, small, scrawny girl, many people doubted me… I could never be strong enough like a boy. That changed, when I searched up the backstory of Wing Chun. A young woman who beat a warlord with a different Kung Fu style, using redirection, minimal movement and used her opponent’s strength against them. There was something special about it, knowing that there is a woman who was strong in her own right. In a club dominated by men, I want to be like Wing Chun, in that I am strong, in my own scrappy way. I am the treasurer of the club, besides doing Wing Chun… I also request for budgets, help create event pages and act as a secretary for the rest of the officers. I also sweep guys off their feet (that is if they leave themselves open).

I saw an advertisement of on campus Wing Chun training on WeChat. I had been always want to try out some martial arts and I know that, Wing Chun is the foundation of Bruce Lee’s Jeet Dun Do. So, I joined the club and go to the sessions regularly. After coming to some sessions, I was asked if I would like to get involved with the club and became Vice President. A semester later, the former president graduated and I became the club president.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Lea
At times, I would get frustrated when I train, I would beat myself up for things I couldn’t do correctly. I would get impatient and angry with myself because I want to perfect my form to impress people in the club. At one point, the style lost meaning to me because of my ego, I realized that this is for my self fulfillment, not to impress the people around me.

Preparing for the event we have every semester can be a challenge. With trying to get an instructor, venue reservations and trying to get funding for the event. The funding request is the most difficult part for me. Sometimes, there are some miscommunication with the school business office and slows down the process.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are an Arizona State University Club. We provide Wing Chun classes to ASU students at no charge. This club is created for those who love Wing Chun and other martial arts. It acts as a bridge between Chinese and American culture, in order for students to learn Chinese Kung Fu culture and its history.

As a president in the club, I would try to get the funding and attend the promotion activities and try to get more people into our club. What makes us proud, is that we are the only Kung Fu club at ASU.
