Meet Layne Farmer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Layne Farmer.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have always been interested in drawing and painting. As a young boy, I took art classes beginning around the age of 8. My fascination with visual art continued through high school and into college where I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing & Painting from the University of North Texas in Denton, TX. From there I went on to pursue my Master of Fine Arts in Drawing & Painting from Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ.

My involvement with the arts has afforded me many opportunities to interact with a wide array of cultures and demographics from all over the world. In the past three years I have had the privilege of showing my work internationally in China, Japan, and Ecuador. For me, connecting and learning from different people is one of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist.

Please tell us about your art.
My organic abstractions are an examination of a myriad of relationships which aim to emphasize integration and harmony. There is a very romanticized approach to the pursuit of formal aesthetics in my work. Additionally, there is a strong metaphorical contemplation between tangible elements within the constructed object and conceptual concerns revolving around social, political, economic, cultural, and other significant topics of our time.

Maintaining a sense of naturalness or spontaneity is a pillar for my work. At the same time, embedded in my process, are implications of the mechanical, the digital, and the contrived. The principles and motives underlying my work are not enforced as a declaration for the purpose of persuasion or promotion. Instead, I see the work as a translation of personal discoveries presented as a neutral space to invite absorption, meditation, and reflection. While my chosen dialogue surrounding the work may reveal an essentialist platform, the ambiguity that’s exists in these abstractions leaves room for non-essential permeations.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
There are many different channels & avenues that artists must navigate which leaves success to be defined by each individual. For me success is defined by the longevity of self-discoveries and relationships that are made by an artist on their creative pursuit. I’ve always seen the artistic journey as a marathon and not a sprint. Personally, this entails balance, endurance, dedication, discipline, struggles, and moments of clarity.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
