Meet Laurie Dickman of Laurie’s Bridal

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Dickman.

Laurie Dickman

Hi Laurie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Over 30 years ago, I unexpectedly found my way into the bridal industry. By day, I was a high school teacher in New York, and by night, I worked at an upscale boutique.

At 21, I was selling $1,500 fur coats and high-end clothing. One day, my boss at the boutique looked at me and said, “You don’t belong here; you belong in NYC!” She called a friend who was a designer in the bridal industry, and soon after, I started working for that designer and manufacturer. And so, my journey in the bridal world began.

It was during this time that I met my now-husband, who was a sales representative in the bridal and prom industry. After a while, I decided to leave my job to join him, and together, we traveled our territory, representing several major designers. Though my husband is still in the industry, my passion for bridal never waned, even as we started a family.

I never dreamed of owning my own bridal shop or felt compelled to open one because of my bridal experience. But my passion for the industry persisted, and I began thinking about how I could continue contributing to it. This led me to sign the lease for Laurie’s Bridal.

Opening Laurie’s Bridal was also a way to honor my family. I launched the shop on April 15, 2016, which would have been my grandmother’s birthday. She had passed away the year before, and we were incredibly close. I wanted to honor her legacy with this venture. I enjoy the sentimental connection I often find with my customers.

At Laurie’s Bridal, my mission is to ensure that every person looks and feels their absolute best. I offer a private, one-on-one gown shopping experience. For me, it’s not just about making a sale but about helping you feel your most confident self. Unlike other boutiques, I prefer the “word of mouth” approach over social media. I’m old school, and I’m okay with that.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing is ever smooth, or it wouldn’t make us who we are today, right? Before COVID-19, my small business was thriving. Customers were increasing, and everything seemed to be on an upward trajectory.

Then COVID struck, hitting me like a gut punch. The growth we had been experiencing came to an abrupt halt. Adapting became the name of the game as we navigated through lockdowns, supply chain disruptions, and shifting consumer behaviors. It was a challenging time, forcing us to reassess strategies, tighten budgets, and innovate to stay afloat in an unpredictable world. Yet, even with the setbacks, there were lessons learned, resilience built, and a newfound appreciation for the world we live in. These adjustments have enabled my business to thrive once again.

Another big challenge is customers thinking that by purchasing their gowns online, they are saving money. Most bridal shops are not as expensive as one might think, and we provide peace of mind, knowing you are getting what you paid for. Supporting local brick-and-mortar bridal shops is crucial for ensuring the best experience and quality when purchasing the most important garment you’ll ever wear.

Unlike often illegitimate online retailers, local bridal shops provide personalized, hands-on service, guaranteeing a perfect fit and exceptional craftsmanship. Brides can try on dresses, feel the fabrics, and receive expert advice from experienced consultants, ensuring every detail is perfect for their big day. There’s an old adage that says, “You get what you pay for,” but this couldn’t be truer when it comes to purchasing from knock-off websites.

Additionally, local shops are integral to the community, creating jobs, fostering connections, and sustaining the local economy. By choosing to shop locally, brides secure an authentic, meticulously crafted gown and help their communities thrive. Investing in local businesses means investing in a vibrant, interconnected community where everyone prospers. I often hear, “I’m only wearing this gown one day.” While that may be true, your pictures and memories will last a lifetime.

As you know, we’re big fans of Laurie’s Bridal. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with the brand?
I specialize in offering personalized, one-on-one gown shopping experiences for each of my customers through appointment-based operations. This approach allows me to dedicate 100% of my attention to every individual who walks through my doors.

Many of my clients express immense gratitude for this level of professionalism and expertise, appreciating the personalized support during what can be an overwhelming, emotional, and draining process. Recognizing that the bridal gown is the most cherished garment a bride will ever wear, I am committed to ensuring that every aspect of this experience is nothing short of extraordinary.

Unlike some shops, my focus goes beyond just making a sale. It’s about ensuring that you feel truly listened to, understood, and, above all, celebrated. With me, it’s like having your very own “Team Bride,” offering emotional support throughout your journey to finding the perfect gown. Think of me as your biggest cheerleader, supporter, and, yes, sometimes, therapist.
