Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Wyman.
Lauren, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am an Author! I started writing when I was ten years old and decided that I wanted to write books when I grew up. It was the stories that I had seen portrayed in movies that made me believe I could do that – be a great storyteller. I wrote throughout middle school, high school, and well after college until I finally published my first novel through Amazon and their KDP Independent Publishing program in 2016. It’s a fantasy novel, that is still available today in both Kindle and Paperback, titled Odette: A Retelling of Swan Lake, which captures a dark fairy-tale retelling of the swan lake ballet story. Between 2016, until now, I had the joy of experiencing motherhood for the first time and had my daughter, Saraloni in May of 2017. Between then, and much after having her, there was little time to do any writing – at least for the fantasy novels that I had such a passion for.
After being out of the scene for a while, I started to toy around with the thought of doing a children’s book. I was nervous because I never thought I would ever be any good at it until I put pen to paper and everything just seemed to flow as naturally as it had before I stopped. The inspiration for that children’s book was her, my daughter, and thus became Space Buns Goes to Day Care, which is my first children’s book released on November 2nd, 2018. This led to a non-fiction work titled Dear Kids Diary, which is a light, crude, funny book for parents on all the crazy moments parenting brings us, as told by me, and other crude, hilariously true stories. I believe now is the time where I have put the most effort into coming back as an Author and returning in a big way. I’ve broadened my horizons, and I don’t think that would have been possible were it not for my family, my husband, and my daughter.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road for creativity is paved with obstacles – As an independent author, you’re not signed with a publishing house as traditional authors may get signed. There’s no royalty bonus up front; there’s no editing team dedicated to your work, or book-cover team trying to execute your vision with the most experience possible. All of this is up to you, and your research alone, and up to whatever budget you’re graced with to make it happen. I’ve been scammed, I’ve gotten lesser quality products due to inexperience, and don’t even get me started on how to find ways to develop your own advertising – it’s quite a process. However, the knowledge that I have gained from doing this is an experience I would never trade, and feel I am much stronger as an author now, then what I was when I first began.
Lauren Kaye Novels – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Every Author is different – we all have our own unique voice, so I don’t feel we can truly be alike or compare ourselves so vividly against one another. I think what we all have in common is dedication and passion in our processes, story-building, and wanting to execute a well thought out book for everyone to enjoy.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I think so far, my children’s book has been my greatest achievement because it captures the struggle that I went through as a mom with having to separate from your kids and go back to work so soon, and it also holds my family as the main characters. Its something my daughter can live with forever, and that’s truly incredible to think that she has been placed as a character in one of my books.
