Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren White.
Lauren, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve loved all things relating to organizing and design since I was very young. In 5th grade, I stayed up to the early hours of the morning reorganizing my BFF’s wonderfully disorganized walk-in closet. She thought I was crazy but I loved every minute of lining up (in rainbow order) every pair of her Birkenstock sandals. Even then, I saw the value of a well-organized space.
For as long as I can remember, family, friends and coworkers commented on my organizational skills. Whether it’s a closet, desk drawer, lesson plans when I was a teacher, how my holiday decorations are stored or a recipe, I began noticing a common theme: people in my life were coming to me for advice on how to get organized and stay that way. My friends and family were often remarking that I should organize homes as a job but it took a few years for me to realize that I could actually make it a career.
Organizing and design go hand in hand, and I enjoy the entire process of turning a space from chaotic to composed. I try to live my best organized life everyday, but I am truly at my best when I’m helping others. The idea that I could help families by organizing their homes is what motivated me to start a professional home organizing business – Intentional Edit. Not only do I love physically organizing, I also enjoy having an online and social media presence that allows me to provide inspiration and helpful organization tips and tricks to a larger audience.
A home is a personal sanctuary where families should thrive. My intention in organizing and design is to add function to the space. I’m known for not seeing spaces as they are but for what they can become. I aspire to inspire my clients to live their best organized lives too!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As a professional organizer, it’s not a surprise that I am a big-time planner. I like to plan ahead, love a well thought out schedule, and excel with balance and efficiency. One obstacle that I have experienced is that the workload varies tremendously from one month, or even one week, to the next. Some weeks are spent with many hours doing the physical organizing and the next might be mostly office hours and the behind the scenes tasks of running a business. It all works out but I didn’t plan for that type of schedule when I was thinking about starting Intentional Edit.
Please tell us about Intentional Edit.
A professional organizer is an expert in space planning and efficiency. Just like a person hires an accountant to do taxes or a personal trainer to help them get in shape, an organizer has expertise in decluttering and creating systems to keep the clutter from creeping in. I offer full-service organizing and am also available to have clients work alongside as we purge, sort and organize. As an organizer, I can act as an accountability partner when a client wants to be involved in the process. Organizers offer a different perspective, without judgment, and encourage the decluttering process and then organize items that are staying.
One thing that sets me apart from other organizers is that I place great value on implementing proper systems. For me, it’s not just about organizing a room or closet but about making sure it functions properly and is easy to maintain. It’s not about getting organized, it’s about staying that way!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Knowing what I know now – If I could do one thing differently, I would have launched Intentional Edit sooner.
