Meet Lauren Oliver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Oliver.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’m an Ohio native. My husband, Chris, and I moved to Arizona about a year and a half ago, not knowing a single person. I was excited about a new adventure, but had no idea that I would end up taking this leap in starting my own business! I was “that girl” who was always dabbling in something creative, but baking wasn’t something I grew up doing, and it always seemed far too difficult. Sifting wasn’t even something I knew how to do. I quickly learned that baking for the holidays was something that I not only enjoyed, but it allowed for me to make others feel special. My passion only grew from there. Baking for others allowed me to be creative, thoughtful, and that alone brought me so much joy.

In December of 2017, I decided to start The Oliver Baking Co. The amount of support I’ve received along the way is really incredible. It’s such a good feeling having someone reach out to me to create cookies for a birthday, holiday party, corporate gifts, wedding favors, and even the boxes that will go to someone just to brighten their day. I now have friends who keep my business cards with them at all times, just in case they come across anyone who might need a baker…that makes my heart so happy! To know that people believe in me, in my baking, and want to support me, that is the greatest form of flattery I could receive. I get to do what I love, be creative, and make others feel special, and that’s truly what it’s all about.

Please tell us about your art.
It’s all about the cookies! I bake a variety of cookies, sea salt caramels made with Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla, pecan pralines, toffee, and also create custom sugar cookies for special events and parties. I am always experimenting with new flavors, which often leads to seasonal flavors that I’ll make available. The newest additions for Christmas are dark chocolate peppermint shortbreads and Mexican hot chocolate with a hint of ancho Chile and cayenne. It’s not just about the flavors, but it’s also about the presentation. Part of what drew me into baking was the presentation. It’s so much fun to attend a party that has a variety of cookies that look too beautiful to eat, and when they taste just as good, that’s a success! I love that I can make that vision come to life. I thrive on working with customers who need help with their vision, whether it is an elaborate dessert table, or a simple, yet customized, gift box to say thank you.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I have to say, I have been pleasantly surprised at the amount of support I have received from the baking community here in Phoenix! It is intimidating, starting on your own, and not necessarily knowing the ropes. I have met some really great people as I’ve navigated being a business owner. We all learn from each other, and there is always room for others. Everyone has their own individual style, and that’s what makes owning a bakery business so much fun. I can’t begin to express the appreciation I have for the customers who keep coming back, and have considered me “their baker” for their parties, events, or gifts they need.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have baked goods at Sweet Salvage in Phoenix during their events that are the third Thursday of each month. The market is a four-day event of pure bliss! If you love antiques or anything vintage, Sweet Salvage is the place to be! I have occasional pop ups for members at Ocotillo Village Health Club & Spa as well. I am a home-based baker, so sending me an email to explore placing an order is the easiest way to connect with me. My email is theoliverbakingco@gmail.com. I post new flavors, and occasional holiday offerings posted on Instagram and Facebook. You can follow me at @theoliverbakingco. My website has a list of pricing available, and is always being updated.
