Meet Lauren Hlivka of Le Lo Boho

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Hlivka.

Lauren, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Where to start! Creativity has always been important to me since I was a little girl exploring clay, paint, and fiber. I was never happier than when I was creating art. Working with tapestries and fiber art is what I do to fill that creative need.

My journey started when I saw this “dip dyed fiber art” on Pinterest, and I thought to myself “I can make that.” I researched for WEEKS on the best type of yarn to use, synthetic and natural based dyes and started to experiment. I quickly found out what worked and what didn’t from a lot of trial and error.

Fast forward about a year, and I created my first “La Luna” design and have been loving this path I’ve ventured down- Its an original concept that I have never seen before, and I absolutely LOVE creating these designs!

Has it been a smooth road?
Ha! Not at all! This journey has been all about trial and error and figuring out what works (and let me tell you, there is a lot that doesn’t work, but thats ok!)

This type of medium can be finicky and you can never truly replicate any of your designs due to the nature of the dye- the color can change depending on the temperature and humidity as well as the temperature the dye bath. I’ve followed the same recipe for a specific color and got two different colors because I made one batch while we had a monsoon (thanks high humidity!)

I think one of my biggest struggles was figuring out how to get the dye off of my skin (FYI a pumice stone works best!) I just try to remember to push through the struggles because you will never see success without them!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Le Lo Boho – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am known for my “Carmella” and my new “La Luna” original designs- these have been uniquely me. I am most proud of my tenacity never to give up and my drive to create new and different pieces that haven’t been done before.

My education and work experience have been in science, biochemistry to be exact. I am fascinated with the chemical processes at the cellular level and have always loved performing experiments! This love for science has come into play over and over in my art.

I am fascinated with the chemistry of the dyeing process and the way the dye binds to the fibers depending on what mordants and fixatives you add to your dye baths. You can get something different every time!

Any predictions for the industry over the next few years?
I believe the industry is heading towards organic minimalism and art that is simple, yet captivating. This is what I would like to my art to be defined as organic, minimalistic, and captivating.
