Meet Las ChicAZ

Today we’d like to introduce you to Las ChicAZ.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I founded Las ChicAZ six years ago. I found a few ladies who I vibe with very well, and we decided to give our crew a name and enter an online skate video contest. We would film a few times a week to stack clips to compile our five min video for The Berrics. Each year we add a few more members. The crew is always evolving.

Each year we plan an epic adventure and invite the whole crew to meet up for a few days at an epic skate destination. Because of our adventures, efforts, and photos, we’ve had some amazing opportunities arise. We’ve been featured in four Spotify Commercials. Nylon Magazine featured our crew in their magazine. Nasty Gal wrote about our Nude Bowl trip in their blog. Also, each adventure has been sponsored by some amazing brands.

The best part of being in our crew is making amazing lifetime friendships.

Please tell us about your art.
We skateboard.

We have also curated a series of events for women. Each month, we host a skate clinic for adult women with a group stretch, live music, a raffle, skate coaching, and a post-skate cool down at a local brewery.

We have a series of shirts that were recently released and are available for purchase via our Instagram @LasChicAZ.

We also arrange creative photo shoots with the crew. Each photo shoot has a specific theme, and we like to explore different photographers for each shoot.

What do you think about the conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
Many of us are older skateboarders. When we started skating, we were usually the only girl at the skatepark. It was very rare to see a female skating.

Now there are so many female skaters! One month we had 70 young ladies show up to skate at our event.

While it’s true that skateboarding is growing and evolving to be more inclusive, we still hold true to our roots of being punk rock and unique. We tend to draw in girls who love to skate who have a love for adventure and being a total badass.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Our next event is one specifically for adult men. Because we throw women-focused events every month, we decided to create an event, “Just for the DUDES.” The event is June 22nd at 9 am at The Wedge Skatepark in Scottsdale, AZ.

Our July event is July 6th in Flagstaff, AZ from 11am-1pm at Foxglen Skatepark. This event will start out with yoga and live music. We encourage the ladies to bring canned food donations for a local charity. Next, we teach the skate clinic and hold a raffle with prizes from our sponsors. Finally, we end at a local brewery.

We also volunteer as coaches for Skate Rising. Skate Rising is a nonprofit monthly event focused on girls ages 4-18. We team up with local charities and teach the girls a life lesson, compassion, leadership, and empowerment through service work and skateboarding.
