Today we’d like to introduce you to LaQuita Smith and Melody Lorn.
LaQuita and Melody, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Over the years, life started to take a toll on our hearts, and at times we felt broken. In August of 2018, we the founders started to have daily conversations about various topics including mental health and the hardships of making valuable and supportive relationships.
Being both from Southern California, we shared similar upbringings and ideals. From Anxiety to depression to losing loved ones due to suicide; we felt the overwhelming need and have come to answer that call. Thinking of ways to overcome these dark times we stand together in the fight to bring peace to not only us but to all those in need.
It was only a coincidence that we met and yet over the course of a month we were able to bring our vision to life. We believe if we can use our past experiences to influence change, then we become one step closer to creating a more coherent and powerful community.
Has it been a smooth road?
We knew coming into this that there would be struggles and obstacles along the way. The stigma of mental “illness” makes it difficult for many people to want to participate or even acknowledge their current situation or temporary hardships.
With that being said, it is our commitment to reach out to as many people as possible to create a fun-filled atmosphere for everyone to feel comfortable to share, participate and develop meaningful relationships.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our main focus is to bring much-needed awareness to mental health. We intend on accomplishing this by having entertainment showcases, conferences and community building events. At these events, we will provide reliable resources to help benefit those who are in need.
This is the beginning progress of building a community that supports and helps heal one another. We also provide volunteer opportunities to build the bond between multiple non-profits and people.
In the future, we plan to host events to fundraise funds to help increase access to education, care and provide financial and emotional support. As an organization, we are most proud to become apart of change needed not only in our community but the world.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Mental health awareness is needed across the nation. As the year’s pass, it is only becoming more relevant, and more apparent that change is needed. There are stories that surface daily of people who have a mental illness and are harming themselves and/or others.
This is why anywhere in the world would be a great place to start a non-profit organization or business. I think for anyone starting out, it’s not about where you reside, but rather how hard you work to get your business started, known and to flourish.
Your business will continue to grow all you have to do is find the group of people that believes in what your company stands for. Success does not happen overnight, be patient, trust the timing, and everything else will fall in place.
