Today we’d like to introduce you to Lana Rubin.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born and raised in Kiev, Ukraine. I swam for the national team in Ukraine until I was 17 years old, but never did I think that I would be living outside of the country. Little did I know, I was lucky enough to receive an athletic scholarship to the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, TX. This gave me an amazing opportunity to study Interior design and Art, which I ended up double majoring in whilst swimming. At first, I struggled with English, but the world works in mysterious way because that’s how I met my husband. Looking back, I feel bad for people who tried so hard to understand my broken English, because I knew 99% of the time nothing would make sense. But now, those people are my friends, and we laugh together at times, when I wouldn’t say a word properly and just ended up nodding my head and smiling. Art was always my hobby, and never did I think I would make a career out of it. After college, when we all had to grow up and be an adult, I was grateful enough to find an opportunity to work with an interior design firm. I would work on art projects on the side for designers who needed custom artwork. What started out as weekend projects turned into a regular second job that I absolutely love! I recently moved to Phoenix, AZ where I decided to solely focus on Art. Despite the hot sun, I am totally in love and ready to explore this place and hope to conquer one soul at the time with my work.
Please tell us about your art.
Knowing that decor and accessories give any space a complete look, most importantly, through the coordination of colors, shapes, and textures, I use my background in interior design to help influence the pieces that I create. I mainly work with alcohol ink, acrylic, resin. We all get this question about inspiration and it just goes back to simply one thing, traveling, and nature. For me, it is an endless source. My desire is that people will be inspired not only by my artwork but also through my experiences in life. I want to encourage others to explore and experience new languages, countries, cultures, landscapes, traditions, food, and so much more!
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I believe that once you find your happy place, it’s alright to be lonely and fall deep into your work, explore ideas, and be engulfed in the creative process. With that said, I always think you should never be afraid to say “Hi” to another artist and ask whatever it is you want to know. I like sharing my experiences and answer questions about technique, materials, approach, etc.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can see my work on my website. From there, you can send me a message and follow me on social media. My Instagram will have the most varied content to see my work process, my inspirations from the outside world, as well as the latest pieces I’ve created.
