Meet Kurt Mangum II of CoupleyFit™, Benefit Corporation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kurt Mangum II, M.S.

Kurt, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story began in the Midwest, growing up as a child our household culture was you could not get up from the dining room table until you cleaned your dinner plate. I was an active kid who played basketball and football, but overeating lead to me becoming overweight. I struggled with insecurities and low self-esteem. I remember practicing all week and having to sit out of youth football games because I was over the weight limit. My family nicknamed me “Buddha”; because of my round belly and round face. I became driven and passionate about transforming my health and my reality. I didn’t have a weight goal back then, I just wanted to “feel better”! I’m grateful for my journey because it allows me to relate to so many people dealing with the same struggles I faced. I then began to transform from being fixated on numbers on the scale to living life in full expectation of feeling my best; getting my S.W.A.N.™ on! S.W.A.N.™ stands for Sleep (and Rest), Water, Activity, and Nutrition.

My wife Deanna and I started consulting co-workers and colleagues in our family business at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. We provided wellness goals and implementing components of our S.W.A.N.™ philosophy, we watched lives transform in real-time. Employees had healthier relationships, boost in morale, fewer sick days, and increased productivity that drastically impacted the bottom line.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our business journey has certainly had peaks and valleys! Initially, we worked full-time and spent nights and weekends growing CoupleyFit™. Our dream started on a napkin; we evolved from fitness boot camps and providing healthy meal services to developing a Population Health Management business model. Now our business model has shifted to S.W.A.N.™ where we focus on healthcare innovation within the Population Health Management space.

Entrepreneurship comes with financial risks, requiring us to walk by faith and not by sight. As a devoted husband and wife team, we took on twice the risk. Risks that have required us to make sacrifices and practice patience. We’ve learned to manage our moments and embrace the small victories in the process.
