Meet Kui Mi Oh and Kat Proffitt of Rubymint General Store in Coronado Historical District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kui Mi Oh and Kat Proffitt.

Kui Mi and Kat, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Rubymint was created by our passion for handmade jewelry and goods. Since we are artists ourselves we were making pieces and selling items festivals, to our friends, and on our on-line store. We starting collecting art pieces and products from artists to sell on our website and realized that we needed a place to store all of our items. We created this store to make it shoppable to our local Phoenicians and built up our on-line store to make it shoppable to the rest of the world. We realized that a lot of people like going to festivals to find these on-of-a-kind treasures but sometimes do not have the time in their schedule to attend. We wanted to create a space where you can find the same treasures that you find at craft fairs and festivals but in a boutique store setting.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The summer was a little tough but we got through it. Our community support has been awesome!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Rubymint General Store story. Tell us more about the business.
Rubymint general specializes in local artisan jewelry, home goods, clothing, glassware, pottery, and more. A lot of our merchandise comes from our neighbors who are artists in the Coronado neighborhood. Kat and I both reside in Coronado as well. We also support charities that give back to our community. Some of these charities include: Caring Coalition (Feeding the hungry in our neighborhood), Beneficial Beans (adults with autism, Max Love (pediatric cancer), Poverties Pets (Dog and Cat rescue).

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t know if luck has played a role in our success. I think timing and synergy had more to do with it. The opportunity for the store presented itself and things just fell in alignment as does life. Things always works out just as it’s supposed to. Having a positive attitude, supporting others, and always trying your best has been my mantra for life and business.
