Meet Kristina Donnay of Maricopa Wellness Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina Donnay.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been a registered nurse for over ten years. I have been an emergency room nurse and Forensic Nurse. As a Forensic Nurse, I collected forensic evidence off sexual assault victims and domestic violence with strangulation victims. I then got my Family Nurse Practitioner degree and went into women’s health. Current healthcare is a difficult realm to practice in. I have always been passionate about hormone health and thyroid treatment. But, in primary care you are unable to give the care you know the patient needs. My mother in law came to me and told me how she had just paid far too much money for a stem cell knee injection. The procedure was done without ultrasound and she did not receive the relief that was promised. As I looked more into complementary health and aesthetics, I saw a lot of things that shouldn’t be happening. I live in a small town and there was not a wellness center or Med Spa in town. I saw a need in the industry and in my own community. So, I approached my husband and parents and gave them my vision. I am fortunate they believed in my dream and supported me from there. My parents have owned many successful businesses. My dad and I decided to take on the majority of the company. However, the four of us are all involved. Once we had a plan my dad and I trained for aesthetics and bio identical hormones. He does not have any medical background. But, we thought it was important for him to learn about the medical just as I needed to learn the business side. We opened our wellness center in April of 2019 and have grown faster than we thought possible.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I am so passionate about hormones due to my own medical issues. I have endometriosis and my husband and I struggled to have children. I was placed in medical menopause and understand the changes and challenges when we lose our hormones. Overcoming my own medical difficulties has made getting my education, becoming a mom, being a wife, working and more, difficult. I overcame them, had two beautiful children and feel better than I ever have due to finding providers that cared. Starting our business has had many obstacles including finding capital to start a Med Spa, building a space, finding staff and countless others. We have overcome all obstacles due to an amazing support team and having four different viewpoints to work through problems.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Maricopa Wellness Center story. Tell us more about the business.
Maricopa Wellness Center is a family-owned and operated Med Spa in Maricopa, Arizona. We specialize in bio identical hormones, aesthetics and skincare. We are the only spa in Maricopa that has two lasers, Ultherapy and PRP therapies. I am beyond proud that in the first year, we won Small Business of the Year from the Maricopa Chamber of Commerce and Best New Med Spa in the Southwest. We were also nominated as best new Med Spa in America. I was nominated as citizen of the year and injector of the year. Our passion, dedication, community involvement and customer service set us apart from the rest.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I was blessed with amazing parents, everything else was a choice. I chose to not let my medical issues define me, I chose my husband, I chose to take a risk and start my own business. All the risks I have taken in my life have been scary but I chose to take them. This isn’t always easy. But, the people around me have always supported me and my dreams.
