Meet Kristina, Sean Barr and Malori Ungvarsky of Lole + Pine Design in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina, Sean Barr and Malori Ungvarsky.

Lola + Pine came about very organically when Sean (master craftsman) was messing around with some wood projects to keep himself entertained. One day he walked inside and both Kristina and Malori saw the faceted vase he made and knew its design needed to be shared with others. They decided that night to create a business together selling wood faceted vases.

Over the years they have always remained super small with the intention to create high-quality unique vases to be apart of everyday homes. They have made it a point to never be a mass production company and so today they create a small amount of unique vases a year that are crafted by hand from tree to vase.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Since this is a small business making a limited number of vases a year, the road has not been too bumpy because we have been able to hone in on our market and keep a focus on what we love. We always want this to be an artistic outlet for us, therefore we really enjoy the slow, methodical pace that this business has taken on thus far.

Lole + Pine Design – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Lola and Pine makes handcrafted faced vases for succulents and cacti. We believe in creating beauty from the normal and mundane and giving it a new and beautiful second life. All of our wood is urban lumber that comes to us from trees fallen in storms or is cleared from the forest to prevent fires. We take all of our products through the slow process of drying, cutting, drilling and ultimately creating a beautiful piece of art suited for a home.

We are so proud of the second life that we give to each piece of wood that becomes one of our vases. Unlike most companies, we use natural Arizona wood that has not been manufactured, none of it comes to us pre-dried and treated, it is wood in its rawest form. We love that we can keep that wood out of the landfill and into homes.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Our proudest moment always comes in the final step of our design process…. when we seal the wood with our natural oil and get to see the true color and beauty of each unique piece of wood.

That is always the moment where we are so proud of because we are able to see the true transformation. In a world full of consumerism where we are always moving on to the next greatest thing, we feel proud that we are creating a timeless piece for someones home.
