Meet Kristen Carli of Camelback Nutrition & Wellness in Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Carli.

Kristen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Like most of us, I’ve watched family members and friends suffer from chronic diseases. I’ve seen first-hand how lifestyle and nutrition can play into the development of these diseases. Since I was young, I’ve always been fascinated by the power food can have on our bodies. I was lucky enough to grow up in a very healthy household. My mom always made sure that my sisters and I had nutritious meals at home. For that, I’m thankful! The habits she set when I was young are the habits I hold today.

With an interest in helping others harness the power of food, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition from Arizona State University. I then matched to Gulf Coast distance dietetic internship and became a registered dietitian nutritionist. I own a private nutrition practice specializing in chronic disease prevention and management.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Opening up a private practice is a big undertaking! But, I knew that going in! I was lucky enough to have some wonderful mentors that believed in me and were very generous with their help. The biggest obstacle has been getting credentialed with insurance companies. While I learned about medical nutrition therapy and nutritional counseling in school, I was never taught the ins and outs of health insurance. What a journey! However, I am happy to report that I now accept United Healthcare, BlueCross BlueShield, and Aetna out-of-network PPO plans.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
In my practice, I work one-on-one with patients looking to improve their nutrition and lifestyle. I specialize in chronic disease prevention and management, including diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, digestive disorders, and obesity. I also work with individuals seeking nutrition advice on a vegetarian or vegan diet. Through cognitive behavior therapy and motivational interviewing, I work to understand what is preventing patients from reaching their healthy lifestyle goals through a patient-centered approach.

What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been a very driven person! My husband and I are both very driven and ambitious people. It is both a blessing and a curse! Ha! We never slow down!

From a young age, I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur. Talking business strategy lights me up and gets me giddy with inspiration!
