Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris McLaughlin.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kris. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I moved to Phoenix in 2005, which is the same year I started my journey in real estate. It was a big transition going from living in cities like New York and San Francisco and working in publishing to living in the Valley of the Sun and working in real estate. It turns out that my marketing and sales skills from the publishing industry perfectly translated over to marketing and selling homes, while the 30-day magazine publishing cycle mirrored the 30 to 45-day home-buying process.
This alignment was no coincidence because once I started doing real estate, I fell in love with it and it was the perfect transition from my old job. To this day, I am grateful for the opportunity that real estate has afforded me in starting a family, connecting with my community, and being able to give back.
In 2015 I found myself depressed and lacking any love for my beautiful life. I was sad, stuck and couldn’t see my way out. I had lost my light. With the help of some very special people, I made the decision to really work on myself personally from the inside. I started doing the self introspective work of challenging old patterns, beliefs & structures through meditation, visualization, journaling, and yoga. I just knew there was more for me to experience within me, and I wanted to discover that. The beauty of it was that not only did I find more joy and happiness within myself during that time, but growing so much personally actually affected my real estate business; the goal I set for the year, I accomplished three times over! This was such an empowering experience both personally and professionally, so I wanted to bring this mindful lens to my business and The Mindful Agent was born.
My goal as The Mindful Agent is to partner with people to elevate their experience. Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest decisions of your life and you want it to be a beautiful and enjoyable occasion. While it is a big deal, it doesn’t have to be stressful. Stress usually comes for two reasons: either you don’t have trust in your realtor or you don’t have trust in yourself. So, I am here to ensure that you have trust in both. Furthermore, the fact that you’re buying or selling a home means that you’ve done a lot of great things in your life to get to this point.
As The Mindful Agent, I will reinforce that and use that as fuel to create an elevated and empowering experience. I hold space for every client to celebrate this and to celebrate themselves through this real estate journey. I am here to create a partnership through mutual trust, mutual respect, and mutual understanding. This leads to clear and mindful communication where we’re both going the same direction, at the same speed, at the same time.
The journey to living a more mindful life, in and out of business, has taken time and a lot of consistency, dedication and growing pains; but ultimately it created a new reality for me and I am so grateful to get to share it with my family, friends, clients, colleagues & community every day.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Anytime you are challenging yourself to grow, you are asking yourself to break long-standing patterns in the brain and start learning how to pause long enough to question and possibly alter automatic responses. So it can feel clunky and awkward. On top of that, I had a story in my head about what a residential real estate business was supposed to look like and what was expected. I was learning that external expectation and the pressure to be something you thought people wanted just wasn’t going to work for me. That’s scary and I found moving through the process to redefine what residential real estate can be required deep self-belief and trust that brought up uncomfortable feelings around self-worth and trust in something bigger. This is work that I still do to this day.
Additionally, as you start shifting your personal energy, people, places and things that felt solidly in place will also shift. You have to be ok with radical change and the shifts that take place as your vibration moves from something lower (the depressed state) to something higher. Patience, kindness and gratitude become louder out of sheer necessity to ground you in your truth and help you maintain a new vibration.
The Mindful Agent – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Mindful Agent is a residential real estate company. I specialize in the Arcadia area of Phoenix and surrounding central neighborhoods that run along the Camelback Corridor. I am known for providing a mindful experience based on true partnership, trust, clear & confident communication and a calm experience all perched on the foundation of 15 years of experience, contract knowledge, negotiation skills and area expertise.
I am most proud to provide a different experience for people in real estate. It doesn’t have to be scary, stressful, frantic or heavy. Navigating real estate from a mindful perspective allows for a light, fun, focused and exceptional experience. I am also proud to serve on the leadership board and bring this mindful lens to my brokerage, North & Co. When I’m not working with clients, I volunteer my time to mentor other real estate agents through the Mindful Business Series, a set of classes I created that covers everything from manifesting for business, meditation, intention, and gratitude to mindful communication and the nuances of contract addendums.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment for me so far was the very first lead that came through my website www.mindfulagent.com. It is so special because it was the first client that found me solely based on the notion of being mindful. This client’s name is Linda and she reached out to me having never met or heard of me, simply because she resonated with the mindful approach she found on my website.
We instantly had a connection. The experience of selling her home and helping her find a new one changed me because it amplified what I already thought was a mindful process. Her belief and alignment with me and the way I do business elevated everything I do. This is what I now call the “Linda Level” of doing business and I still use it as a bar to measure my performance with clients.
