Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris Adair.
Hi Kris, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to help people. I didn’t initially know in what capacity that would be and I didn’t want to wait to figure it out, so I joined the military at age 19. A few years after joining the military, I started taking college courses. I still wasn’t completely settled on what degree I wanted to pursue but I knew it required at least a bachelor’s degree, so I figured I’d just get started. The only trouble with that plan was that I was still active duty. After about a year of seriously committing to my studies, I got orders to deploy overseas. I nevertheless persevered and even while deployed I was able to continue completing courses through the education center at the base where I was deployed. With the constant starts and stops in my journey and military career, the typical 2-year track to completing all my pre-requisites took about 10 years! Once I finally settled in Phoenix, Arizona I finally committed to pursuing a nursing degree and was able to finish all my requirement and subsequently accepted into the nursing program at Phoenix College. At that time, I was able to transition off active duty into the Air Force Reserves and commit fully to my nursing degree. I completed my Associate’s Degree in Nursing, completed the nursing exam for my registered nurse license, and was already enrolled in Grand Canyons Bachelor of Nursing Degree program. I completed that degree in twelve months and then enrolled in their Master’s in Nursing Education program. I guess you could say I was making up for all the previous delays in my educational journey and I didn’t want to put it off any longer. About a year after completing my master’s degree, I enrolled in the Family Nurse Practitioner program at Grand Canyon and started having a little more mental clarity into my future goals and that’s when I started dreaming up the idea for a medical spa.
It began as just a thought. I’d gone to medical spas before, but I guess you could say I sometimes felt a bit out of place. If I asked questions about skincare or recommended products it was often met with blank stares or suggestions that weren’t specific to my own skin. It was disheartening. Even as I investigated the medspa industry I realized that although there were tons of medspas across the country—even here in Phoenix, there was a lack of diversity and inclusivity in treatment options and product selection. This became my driving force, and I knew I wanted to change that.
I talked to my husband about my ideas. I’m not completely sure what I thought my husband was going to say when I told him about my ideas, but I know I was quite surprised when he was like, “let’s do it!”. It wasn’t a hard sell; he was behind me 100%, so I got to work and started learning even more about the medspa industry and what I needed to do to get this business started. I took certifications, completed training classes all while still working on my nurse practitioner degree and working full time. My husband and I laid the foundation for the business, developed our contracts, found a medical director, and a place to get started.
On August 3, 2018, we opened Glow by Kris Medspa. We were excited! My husband and I opened up our own business. It was a dream turned reality!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
In hindsight, agreeing to start our busy was the easy part. Now came the actual day-to-day business duties like learning how to make it work, pay bills and thrive. We knew the basics requirements of opening a business but not a family clinic and medspa. We didn’t have a playbook to follow so all of it was really Dony and I figuring it out as we went along. I did a lot of research, analyzed similar business models which helped me understand what to do. We made mistakes but quickly learned from them and used it as fuel to adjust our business practices to make sure they were sound.
The other challenge to our business was we didn’t take the traditional route with a business loan or advanced funding. We literally started with less than $2000 that we invested into this dream. This by itself was challenging but also helpful to our business model because it forced us to start slow, develop our business plan and ideas, and ensure our foundation was solid as we slowly grew. All the revenue we generated in the first three years, we just put right back into the business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I like to think of my business as a one-stop shop clinic. We offer a variety of aesthetic and medical services to meet the needs of our diverse client demographic. We are primarily known for our customized aesthetic treatments from facials to plasma injections for natural rejuvenation. We are also known for our gentle hand with medical care, prevention and health promotion with our patients. We really like to take the time to get to know our patients and understanding their medical needs and provide them support to manage their health. One of my biggest passions is Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy. Helping women and men feel balanced and whole is such an important part to wellness. So many people suffer from hormone imbalance and don’t even realize it. Often symptoms of fatigue, feeling off or not your normal self can be directly correlated to hormone imbalance when we evaluate for it. Once hormone replacement therapy is started, it’s like a light switch has been turned back on in my patients. They feel so much better and feel like they’ve gotten their life back.
Lastly, our latest addition of our HD Body Contouring procedure has been an exciting addition. This is a minimally invasive procedure that removes stubborn fat and contours your body’s natural curves at the same time, often in one visit. It’s really been a life-changing procedure for so many people that struggle with losing weight or getting rid of stubborn fat.
What makes you happy?
Being with my family makes me happy, helping people build confidence and feel good about themselves makes me happy. I get to do that every day in a variety of ways through the services I provide. It really is such a rewarding feeling that makes me feel like I’m winning every time.
