Meet KJ Bennett of JoeeSpacey in Mesa, Tempe and Chandler

Today we’d like to introduce you to KJ Bennett.

KJ, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I sort of tinkered with designing clothes several years back, and in terms of graphic design, I stumbled over that by way of an internship that I had a few years ago. I began shipping JoeeSpacey merch (streetwear clothing line) to AZ in 2019 after meeting AZ artist/creator Mia B. Adams. Shortly after, I made more connections in Mesa AZ and then proceeded to come to Arizona in the fall to create content (visuals & photography to promote the fall merch) and to visit as well. I’ve always taken to the creatives, things/people, that were free and that embodied love and doing your own thing. Being proud to go against the grain to be who you are.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It HAS and CAN be challenging at times, sure. I’m still doing the groundwork for my brand and still creating to convey the messages that are important to me, as well as building up a sense of community among creatives. There are definitely times where I realize patterns in sales and even my creative process. More often than not, it’s a show and prove thing just like anything else really, but connecting and creating what you desire to see is what’s most rewarding. Seeing the supporters are happily supporting you and giving you their hard earned money and that they WANT to be apart of what you’re building, those are the payoffs and rewards from creating. In terms of challenges, there were moments when I first settled into the idea of designing and had peers that withheld information as to how to begin my journey or even just how to begin, and THAT motivated me. Because why wouldn’t you want your fellow man to get ahead or build something of his own, yknow? Even in terms of support. Early on, it felt as if I wasn’t getting the support I sought out, but the tide changed and things came around in my favor eventually.

JoeeSpacey – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
JoeeSpacey (pronounced joey spacey) is a brand that’s about producing imagery that embodies love, nature, community, confidence and overall creativity. I’m a creator that designs streetwear merch. My brand motto is “Stayin’ above the negativity!” and I stand by that wholeheartedly. I create graphics and visuals and enjoy a good collaboration when I can manage to get it done. I’m most proud of my emotional appeal and publishing content that make people FEEL something. To evoke emotion is to captivate the watcher/consumer. I create things that feel natural, and that motivates me to learn and grow. I don’t necessarily have a team for JoeeSpacey so my personal social media presence and my peers help me promote the images and clothing that I design. I believe my overall outlook on life and lighthearted nature bleed and spills into my brand and people feel and take notice of that once they’ve taken a good look into what I’m doing and have been apart of as of lately.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment so far has been carving out that west coast connection. For me personally, as an east coast guy, to come to the west coast and to be able to create and connect, was a beautiful experience and was very much so imperative for my brand. It’s ALWAYS an amazing feeling to be able to make a sale and see the profits from doing good business, BUT, to travel for my brand and to be able to create and get the building blocks going in another area, let alone another state or coast, makes me proud. Because these citizens are potential consumers and supporters and have the opportunity to grow WITH me and see my progression.
