Meet Kimbralon Barnes of Focused Living Counseling in South

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimbralon Barnes.

Kimbralon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started as an accountant for 15 years. I wanted to align with my purpose and transitioned into the counseling field. I worked as a counselor at a residential treatment center, domestic violence shelter, and outpatient clinic. During my time at the outpatient clinic and its visionary leadership, I was inspired to start my own practice. Focused Living Counseling was created to bring awareness to and reduce stigma surrounding mental health in the minority and in the faith-based communities.

Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road. I had to get past my own anxieties of opening my own practice. Also, finding a balance between family, working full-time, and operating my own business.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Focused Living Counseling is dedicated to providing the highest quality therapeutic experience delivered with trust, care, and understanding. Focused Living Counseling provides services to individuals faced with mental health challenges, such as anxiety, depression, and stress, and addiction.

I am most proud of my unique proprietary, Under The Scope Scopecast, an online show that highlights influential people in the community and their experiences in respect to mental health. The show encourages dialogue about mental health by providing the community with the opportunity to ask questions and make connections in their own life. Under The Scope is not a lecture-based show-it is an interactive show the facilitates necessary conversations surrounding mental health.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Mental health professions are on a positive trajectory due to the rising mental health concerns during COVID-19. The mental health field has simplified access to services by offering therapy telephonically, virtually, and by text. In the future, I believe these methods will continue. I will continue offering services via these methods and expand Under The Scope into a studio setting for in-person attendance or travel to locations around the globe to do the show.
