Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Coates.
Kimberly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up always wanting to work in the Veterinary field ever since I can remember. After accomplishing every goal, I had set for myself and after graduating in 2012 with an Associate’s Degree in Veterinary Sciences and obtaining my state license, I always had the dream of starting a business of my own. However, I didn’t make this a goal of mine. I loved the idea of being able to pet sit for someone who could truly trust and feel comfortable with an experienced Veterinary Technician taking care of their pet(s), but within their own home environment so their pets can maintain their normal routine. One day, I came home from work and my boyfriend, Isaac, had surprised me with a designed website for a pet-sitting business of my own! He knew, this had been my dream and with his background in marketing, he helped give me the little push I really needed to make this dream come true! After seeing the website, he designed, my ideas starting blooming instantaneously: the business name, my bio, and I even hand-drew my own logo for Paramount Pet-Sitting and become LLC certified. I immediately jumped on spreading the word of my business on various websites and by word-of-mouth, my business just started BOOMING and I could not have been happier!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I will admit that it has “mostly” been a smooth road. The struggle as an entrepreneur is always “consistent income.” The future I see is, where I can put 100% focus into Paramount Pet-Sitting and not have to work another job to make sure the bills are paid. I have the vision in my head that I will have quite a few employees, so that my company can run smoothly with or without me here. I mention this because my boyfriend and I like to take a 2 to 3-day trip at least once a month. We love traveling, nature, and of course: animals!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Paramount Pet-Sitting story. Tell us more about the business.
What ultimately sets Paramount Pet-Sitting apart from other pet-sitting companies, is that I come to your home to pet sit so that your pet(s) gets to maintain their normal routine and avoid common boarding issues such as: upper respiratory infections like Kennel Cough and fleas. I treat your pets just as I would want my pets treated. What also sets my business apart from the others is the fact that I have 6 years of experience working in the veterinary field as a Veterinary Technician. In the event of an emergency, I am calm and collective in knowing how to handle almost any situation. I own and run Paramount Pet-Sitting and firmly believe in living life to the fullest. You can trust that your pet(s) is in the safe hands of an experienced Veterinary Technician so you can truly enjoy your vacation away from home. I will admit I have a soft spot for senior pets, which unfortunately, not many pet-sitters specialize in. With my experience, I am able to provide topical, oral and injectable medications with a working knowledge of the contraindications and side effects of most drugs. I also love what I do, because I send pet owners picture updates, if not everyday, then every other day depending how long they are away. I love hearing all the positive responses from my clients so that they never feel “too” far away from their fur babies!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t know that luck has played any role in my business to be honest. I would say I am extremely grateful for the experience and skillset I have gained in the past 6 years as a Veterinary Technician so that, I could truly benefit the lives of pets. I am grateful that I knew exactly how to handle the only emergency situation I have ever run into during the lifespan of my business. The owners could not have been happier or more grateful that I was there for this type of situation versus the kid next door who would have no idea what vitals to check and what to do. I would also say that I am extremely grateful for my boyfriend, Isaac. I guess, I am “lucky” in a sense to have a marketing guru by my side to help me with all the SEO, keywords, website design, and getting me on so many important sites like Google Maps, Yelp, Angie’s List, etc.
