Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Taylor.
Kim, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been passionate about makeup and have wanted to pursue that passion in some way but never knew where to start. In 2015, I was living in Las Vegas when I decided to take a step towards starting my career. After searching for a few months, I found a school out there that was strictly for makeup and I applied! I was in school for eight months and graduated in August of 2016. My time there was amazing, I learned about beauty makeup, special fx, and airbrush/body painting. I moved back to Arizona in October of 2016 and continued to try to pursue my makeup career. I started out freelancing here and there, while still looking for a permanent position somewhere. It took two years before I was finally offered a position in the industry. I now work for MAC Cosmetics and I love it! Makeup is my passion and I will continue to strive to reach the goals I have set for myself in my career.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve definitely hit a few bumps in the road to get where I am today. I started my makeup career path while living in Las Vegas. When I graduated, I had a few job opportunities lined up, but I ended up moving back to Arizona so those jobs fell through. It wasn’t easy for me to pick back up where I left off when I left Las Vegas, it took two years of job searching, multiple interviews, and a lot of rejection for me to finally land a job in the beauty industry here in Arizona. I’m glad I waited because I found a job with a company I’ve always wanted to work for!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a professional makeup artist! I’ve been in this industry for almost four years now and I specialize in beauty and special effects makeup. I’m most proud of all of the work I’ve done so far and how much I’ve grown since I started this career. I do love doing every day, wearable makeup looks that I do on most of my clients, but I definitely love when a client lets me do whatever I want on them! I love letting my mind and creative roam free when creating looks, especially when I do work on myself. I don’t like to stick to one specific makeup style and I think that definitely sets me apart from a lot of makeup artists.
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were just starting out?
I’ve thought about this a lot and honestly, I wouldn’t change a single thing. I believe that I’m where I should be with my career and I’m glad I stuck it out. I’ve had plenty of moments where I wanted to quit and just give up completely, but I didn’t and I’m finally in a spot where I am truly happy with my career.
